It's National Pastry Day, so help yourself to a slice of pie-crust science. (What's the roll of butter vs. margarine in all this? Glad you asked! We have the answer: bit.ly/ButterBattle)

The Food Lab: The Science of Pie Dough
If there's one thing that instills fear into the hearts and minds of American cooks, it's pie crust. I know. At one time, I was one of those people. Pie crusts were the Mumm-ra to my Lion-O, and it was all because they were a mystery to me. What makes them flaky?

Secrets! Romance! Scandal! The Hush-Hush Love Of Philly’s Paint King And His Irish Lass

The congregation of Old First Reformed built a third church at Fourth and Race Street to meet the growing needs of their fold and to reduce the level of traffic noise heard from their former location on Race Street. The third church was dedicated on March 4, 1837.

This article has 2 other Philadelphia locations (Show)

The John Lucas Paint Company was an early pioneer in the American paint and varnish industry. Established in 1848 at 33 North Front Street (a spot now covered by I-95), the firm marketed Lucas Liquid Paint, a ready-mix paint that became very popular.

The Old First Reformed Church-United Church of Christ at Fourth and Race Streets-where a live-animal crèche is on display during the Christmas season every year since 1973-has been the center of several colorful episodes over the past three centuries. In addition to the church congregation's nearly 300 years on the site, the current church building has lived a peculiar life.

While we are not rooting for one team or the other in the upcoming Army vs. Navy game, we must concede that the 1913 regulations governing the admission of candidates into the U.S. Naval Academy were rigorous! While processing a series of records from Record Group 181, Records of the Naval Districts and Shore Establishments, we uncovered an interesting booklet entitled “Regulations Governing Admission of Candidates into the U.S. Naval Academy.” Dated 1913, the regulations outline the U.S. Navy Department’s physical, moral, and intellectual requirements for enlisted Navy personnel to be admitted to the U.S. Naval Academy as midshipmen. To see if you would qualify, try a few of the questions from the practice examination! Or grab a friend and quiz one another! Take the quiz by visiting the Pieces of History blog. This post comes from our very own Samuel Limneos, Archives Technician at the National Archives at Philadelphia. https://prologue.blogs.archives.gov/2017/12/07/do-you-have-what-it-takes-to-be-a-midshipmen-at-the-u-s-naval-academy-1913-edition/#more-28172 Tagging: Army West Point Football, Navy Football, Navy Department Library, Nimitz Library, United States Naval Academy

tonight at The Clay Studio resident artist Jacob Raeder gave a fantastic talk about his artistic journey and his ever-evolving artistic practice, which most of the time involves clay. here's a shot of his Chia Pets that he made during a fellowship in The Netherlands. the folks there had never heard of Chia Pets, and thought he was a genius inventor working with clay and moisture and seeds, when really he was being a genius about exposing differences in culture, and how we literally make our own cultural distinctions with our own bare hands.

We have reached our goal of 300 for the food drive. Let's concentrate on our toy donations now. Thanks for helping us out. All donated items (even the toys) will go to Feast of Justice. http://www.feastofjustice.org/

    Feast Of Justice
Poverty doesn't distinguish between young and old, it doesn't recognize race or religion, male or female, or even working or unemployed. It is indiscriminate and spreading. The one piece that is held in common is that the people that Feast of Justice serves are our neighbors, our community, and the people we meet on the block.

He scrambled his mind tracing the trajectories of contemporary European design as a Fulbright Scholar to the Netherlands, and set off firecrackers at the SAIC while getting his MFA in Ceramics.
