Come Join a Student Celebration of O.V. Catto on May 7, 2018, 9:30 am – 2 pm at Philadelphia City Hall. At the age of 16, O.V. Catto began “speaking up” about the issues of his day that concerned him. This year, the School District of Philadelphia and a group of cultural and education partners in collaboration with the Catto Memorial Fund, produced the first O.V. Catto education initiative. This initiative trained 90 educators at 52 schools and brought the story Catto and American Civil Rights into their classrooms reaching over 11,200 students! At this event there will be a representative group of these students speak about their education journey and Catto at City Hall with Mayor Kenney. Mural Arts is also providing a “Paint Day” in the City Hall Courtyard for the new Catto Mural that will be installed in the fall at Universal Institute Charter (Broad and Catherine). For more information about the Catto Memorial Fund, see their website here: http://www.ovcattomemorial.org/

We are excited to announce our new Resident Artist! Stephanie Kantor is originally from Pittsburgh. She earned her MFA in ceramics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and her BFA at Penn State University. Currently she is a Resident at Red Line Contemporary Art Center in Denver, Colorado. We are very excited to welcome Stephanie as the newest member of The Clay Studio Resident Program this coming September. Stephanie shared her thoughts on the Resident Program, The Clay Studio, and Philadelphia: "Working at The Clay Studio has always been a dream of mine ever since I first visited while in undergraduate school at Penn State. The Clay Studio is one of the top ceramic residencies that not only offers an all-star cast of residents but has invigorated the surrounding communities through exposure to the arts and education. Philadelphia is well situated in the larger global art market and has an exciting contemporary art scene that will allow my practice to reach greater audiences and participate in a wider critical dialogue. My practice will be dramatically influenced by Philadelphia’s rich history, by living and working in such a vibrant city. Living in a place like Philadelphia would provide me with endless inspirations from the cobblestone streets and historic colonial architecture to visiting places like the Mercer Museum and Moravian Pottery and Tile Works. Overall, I see Philadelphia as the ideal city that will support my practice and The Clay Studio would provide a platform for me to reach my goal of being a sustainable working artist and educator."
