Job growth has been sufficient to lower the f...

Job growth has been sufficient to lower the formal rate of unemployment, but not enough to get Philadelphia back to 1990 job levels or reduce the high poverty rate. Philadelphia still has 5% fewer jobs than in 1990, while our suburbs are up 26%. Find out the reasons and potential solutions in State of Center City 2018, coming tomorrow. #SOCC2018

State of Center City Preview - Unemployment
The Center City District (CCD), Central Philadelphia Development Corporation (CPDC) and Center City District Foundation (CCDF) work together to enhance the vitality and competitiveness of Philadelphia's downtown. In 1991 the business leadership organization CPDC created the CCD business improvement district to deliver daily services with the goal of making Center City clean and safe.

"While the average American diet amounts to about 5 kg of carbon dioxide emissions per day, the typical meat- and dairy-heavy diet amounts to three times that. By bringing those resource-intensive diets more in line with the average American diet, we could save 0.27 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in a single day – that’s the equivalent of removing 661 million cars off the road." http://bit.ly/2qSwikW

A Surprising Solution to Lowering Our Greenhouse Gas Emissions
This April marks the 48th Earth Month, offering us an opportunity to reflect on our collective impact on the one and only planet we call home. Many simple life changes can make a big difference - switching our household electricity provider to renewable or carbon-neutral energy sources, replacing inefficient household electronics, using cold water to wash our clothes, signing up for a composting service, and recycling, just to name a few.

AFAR has chosen Renoir: Father and Son / Painting and Cinema as one of the “10 Art Exhibitions in the U.S. Worth Traveling for This Spring!” This exhibition, which features paintings, ceramics, drawings, and films, examines the tender and tangled story between a father and son, and how their relationship illuminates intersections between painting and cinema. On view May 6 – September 3, 2018. Book your tickets: http://bit.ly/Renoir-Father-Son

10 Art Exhibitions in the U.S. Worth Traveling for This Spring
This spring, U.S. museums are exploring the rise of the machine, sculptural attempts to replicate the human body, and unsung voices in contemporary art. Here are 10 shows (including a new permanent installation) worth a trip, including stimulating stops in New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Denver, and Philadelphia.

"If local growth since 2009 was robust enough...

"If local growth since 2009 was robust enough to make us just average, attaining the 2.3 percent growth rate of America’s largest cities, Philadelphia would have added 45,400 more jobs -- one homegrown Amazon -- on top of existing growth of 55,100 for a total of 100,500 new jobs." More in CCD President Paul Levy's op-ed on philly.com.

Sure, Philly is growing. But not fast enough | Opinion
The Philadelphia story is not a tale of two cities; it's a tale of one city not growing fast enough to address problems we've inherited, when we can count less on higher levels of government for help. - Paul R. Levy, Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News

The way we see it, art goes beyond walls––it’s everywhere. In curating his collection, Dr. Albert Barnes gave us a fresh new lens to view not only art, but also the world. By arranging works according to color, light, line, and space, we’re invited to make unexpected and exciting connections between pieces from different eras, places, and cultures. Your perspective shifts: Colors seek synchrony. Diverse themes find unity. The effect is so inspiring, it stays with you––long after you’ve left our building. Come on in this spring! Discover why after every visit, you’ll never stop #seeingtheBarnes.

    SEPTA advances with sustainability initiatives
In general, experts agree that one of the most environmentally beneficial things the average person can do is to leave their car at home and ride mass transit. But at SEPTA, the carbon footprint is diminished a little more due to the diverse sustainability initiatives underway, from acquiring more electricity-powered buses to using renewable energy and even simpler tasks like recycling rainwater to wash buses.

Did you know that we had over 50 volunteers that came on Saturday, for #ComcastCaresDay at Bache-Martin? They helped us spruce up our garden, getting it ready for Bache in Bloom Silent Auction and Raffle, they helped give our school a good spring cleaning, filling up a 40' dumpster, organized Ms. Pierce's closet, AND helped us enter more of our books into the library system (getting us closer to that opening goal). How amazing is that?! A huge THANK YOU to all these wonderful volunteers both from Comcast, and Friends of Bache-Martin; from the students, faculty, and parents!

Gray Ghosts, the Last Caribou in the Lower 48 States, Are 'Functionally Extinct'
HELENA, Mont. - The battle to save the so-called gray ghosts - the only herd of caribou in the lower 48 states - has been lost. A recent aerial survey shows that this international herd of southern mountain caribou, which spends part of its year in the Selkirk Mountains of northern Idaho and Washington near the Canadian border, has dwindled to just three animals and should be considered "functionally extinct," experts say.

Happy Birthday to Alfred Maurer, who was born on this day in 1868. Maurer was an American modernist painter and a good friend of Dr. Albert Barnes. In “Still Life,” the use of bold colors and juxtaposition of decorative patterns remind us of a work by Henri Matisse, whom Maurer greatly admired. 🎨 Alfred Maurer. “Still Life,” c. 1909–1910.
