"Some 200 area homeowners aired their concerns and questions about the proposed relocation of the Ad Prima Charter School from its Frankford campus to 8034 Thouron Ave., directly across the street from the F. S. Edmonds Elementary School, during a more-than-three-hour public meeting. The session was called by the visibly angry Ninth District Councilwoman Cherelle L. Parker. She said she was never contacted by the Philadelphia School District or the charter school about the late May lease signing nor the School Reform Commission’s approval after 'public' meetings at the end of April. Parker said she only learned about this when angry homeowners and Edmonds parents contacted her office asking why they were not aware of the public meetings, open houses or relocation of the charter school to their neighborhood."

  • I was unable to attend this meeting due to a prior engagement, but would have loved to have been there. I am a long time resident of East Mt. Airy and welcome the alternative that Ad Prima adds to our neighborhood educational choices. There are some parents whose only option for educating their children is Edmonds due to the cost of private and parochial schools. Ad Prima is a Blue Ribbon School, as such a great addition to our community and an additional option for our children.

In early June 2018, City Council approved the first round of sites for Rebuild! Here's what that means and why that's important. Rebuild is the City's program to improve parks, rec centers, playgrounds, and libraries across Philly's neighborhoods. Most sites will be funded through bonds paid for by the Philadelphia Beverage Tax.

person walking trying to open all automobiles doors which are left unlocked.

There's a man walking down 7500 block of Limekiln Pike and he's checking all doors to your automobiles to see if they were left unlocked. 2 people have had things taken from their automobiles due to their own negligence. He's a petty thief who takes cartons of water and paper towels toilet paper and any change you may have in your car. He even took handicapped placards left in the glove compartment. Please take a moment and lock your doors. He goes from car to car. I witnessed him doing this but he moves quickly.

Free Library of Pride For the second year, the Free Library of Philadelphia is going all out for Pride, with neary 50 LGBTQ-related events at its more than 20 branches. “The Free Library of Pride program is really driven by librarians, and the the librarians are really responding to the needs that they see from their patrons,” says Andrew Nurkin, head of the Free Library’s Center for Public Life. That means events for all ages, ranging from the scholarly to the silly. Here are a few highlights and the entire lineup of events: https://libwww.freelibrary.org/calendar/main/home/page/1/terms/free-library-of-pride

Celebrate Pride Month by returning to its roots
June is Pride Month, which means celebrations of the LGBTQ community all month long, including the 30th annual Philadelphia Pride Parade this weekend. Pride has become synonymous with rainbow flags, day drinking, and glitter, but it began with the riots at the Stonewall Inn in 1969 and was fueled by decades of activism - raising awareness about AIDS, agitating for equal rights and marriage equality.

While there are many different formats these days - it looks like traditional books may be best for some children.

What's Going On In Your Child's Brain When You Read Them A Story?
"I want The Three Bears!" These days parents, caregivers and teachers have lots of options when it comes to fulfilling that request. You can read a picture book, put on a cartoon, play an audiobook, or even ask Alexa. A newly published study gives some insight into what may be happening inside young children's brains in each of those situations.

More than just books!

More than just books!

Why Philly's crumbling libraries aren't just libraries anymore | Mike Newall
In a 103-year-old library in Southwest Philadelphia, where the roof is leaky, the windows are drafty, and the heating and cooling system is as finicky as an old crank, three men sat under dull lights at a bank of computers, trying to land a job.

Please join Art Matthews in a discussion of his book, Historical Commemoration of the Black in Blue. The book is a collection of photos and articles that commemorate some of the accomplishments of African Americans in law enforcement; primarily in the Philadelphia Police Department. Mr. Matthews has researched the ten-year campaign (from 1871 to 1881) by the African American citizens of the historic 7th Ward, to hire African Americans as police officers. Copies of the book will be available. Thursday, May 17, 2018 6:30 P.M.

Through Cooking, Immigrants Better Understand English, America
Food and conversation go together like love and marriage; they are a natural pairing, one that evokes home and comfort. That is exactly why the Free Library of Philadelphia offers cooking classes to immigrants and refugees. They learn American cooking, sure, but they also learn the English language.

Weather is fine for Pokemon Go

Weather is fine for Pokemon Go

What the Free Library learned about civic engagement from Pokémon Go - Generocity Philly
Yes, Pokémon Go is still a thing. The augmented reality game for smartphones exploded in Summer 2016 and while its popularity has certainly dwindled, it still had 65 million active monthly users a year out (and still prompts meetups in Philadelphia). The game can obviously bring people together.
