Pop-Up Dinner

Where: Awbury Arboretum at the Francis Cope House at 1 Awbury Rd.

    Pop-Up Dinner
Per the Eventbrite page, this is "a dinner inspired by the ancient Celtic solstice tradition of enjoying foods with the colors of the sun, that feature the force of fire and light!" Sounds exciting. The five-course dinner, prepared by Claire Phelan, will feature seasonal produce, foraged flowers, fragrant herbs and "forest things."

The Goddard School, a leader in early childhood education, located in Plymouth Meeting, PA has been awarded a gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. The Goddard School located in Plymouth Meeting was awarded the highest points earned from any certified daycare facility nationwide from the updated LEED certification program.

LEED certification, a third-party certification program and nationally accepted benchmark for green buildings, recognizes high-performance schools that are healthy and comfortable for students and teachers. LEED certification is recognized across the globe as the premier mark of achievement in green building. By addressing the uniqueness of school spaces and children’s health issues, LEED provides a comprehensive tool for schools that wish to build green with measurable results.
Some of the school’s energy and sustainability features include:

• Triple pane windows that prevent drafts, save energy from escaping the building, and allow the sun to heat spaces during winter months.
• Super insulated walls, floor, and roof that reduce the size of heating and cooling equipment and keep room temperatures comfortable.
• A building envelope that is designed to reduce air infiltration to passive house levels.
o Passive house buildings are super-insulated, virtually airtight structures that rely on solar energy and the heat generated by people and appliances to do the heavy lifting on climate control, especially during the winter.
• An interior lighting system that harvests free daylight entering the building via classroom and clerestory windows.

Herbicides at Carpenters Woods

I live across the street from Carpenter's Woods, along the Thumb.

I find it curious that, to contain invasive plants at Carpenter's Woods, an herbicide is sprayed whose active ingredient, triclopyr acid, offers "mild toxicity to birds" and which kills non-invasive plants, while killing and/or toxifying the berries that surround the Thumb, that birds eat.

Last summer three little signs were posted at the Thumb which were not sufficient to warn my landlady, her dog, and myself that walking the sidewalk might cause irritation to skin or eyes. Both of which happened.

Perhaps others were affected, too.

As an ecologist who has taught at two universities, I am not yet convinced that destroying invasives at the perimeter of this park is of greater benefit to biodiversity here than the damage that may be caused to birds, berries, and people here.
