Dozens ordered to leave West Philly apartments ahead of sale
Dozens of residents in two West Philadelphia apartment buildings received letters April 9 telling them to move out by April 30 when the doors would be locked and utilities shut off. The letter said the city was ordering the landlord to cease operations. The city, however, said Tuesday that it issued no such order.

Reading Aloud to Your Kids Can Promote Good Behavior and Sharpen Their Attention
It's hard to study how whales hear. You can't just give the largest animals in the world a standard hearing test. But it's important to know, because noise pollution is a huge problem underwater.

Honors, finally, for a Tuskegee Airman from Philly, lynched by the Nazis | Mike Newall
In a war that shaped the American consciousness, there are still shamefully forgotten horrors. And murder of Walter P. Manning particularly chilling because it drew on the sins of our own past. - Mike Newall, Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News

'People realized smog could kill': Legacy of 4 deadly days in Donora, Pa.
It wasn't unusual for smog to hang over the town of Donora, 27 miles south of Pittsburgh on the bank of the Monongahela River, in the mornings. But on Oct. 26, 1948, it just grew thicker and thicker. And people began to die.

This time of year is notorious for potholes, and there seems to be even more of them than usual. If you live literally anywhere in Philly, chances are you can name at least four road craters giving your neighborhood trouble.

Even small changes on the playground help students develop confidence, build social and leadership skills, and get the "brain break" needed for academic success. A report from the Institute of Medicine found that children who are more active "show greater attention, have faster cognitive processing speed, and perform better on standardized academic tests than children who are less active."

Our Closet is holding a free clothing pop-up ...

Our Closet is holding a free clothing pop-up shop at The Common Place, 58th & Chester Avenue on Monday, April 30th from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. Our Closet is a volunteer-driven non-profit that provides free clothing to people in need via pop-up shops in different neighborhoods throughout the city. Their mission is to replicate a true shopping experience, with warm and welcoming volunteer sales associates, so that vulnerable Philadelphians can receive the clothing they need with dignity and respect. They operate on a “deli counter” system, distributing numbers to shoppers as they arrive. They are invited to shop for five free items once their number is called. There are no eligibility requirements, and all are welcome (though you must be 16 years of age or older to shop). They are hoping to hold pop-ups at The Common Place every month.

Penn study finds most black men with trauma aren't getting treatment
During a typical visit to the emergency room, most patients encounter doctors who will do everything they can to address physical symptoms as quickly as possible. But gunshot wounds and other injuries often come with psychological health issues, too, such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, or anger that's hard to manage.
