Program helps 'later' years be fun
Updated 12:17 pm, Monday, January 8, 2018 They say that with age comes wisdom. And for the most part, that's true. At 68, I like to think I have most things in my life figured out. I raised one daughter, and studied and worked in the molecular biology field, teaching biology, chemistry and dual credit chemistry to high school students for many years.

Stand Against Ageism

How the 'Baby Boomer' Label Can Lead to Discrimination
Many labels come with stereotypes attached, and applying them can influence how a specific individual is viewed, and treated. While these harmful labels are often based on race or religion, new research identifies a different large group of Americans who are surprisingly subject to being stigmatized: Baby Boomers.

The Benefits of Choir Singing When You're Older
"I didn't expect to give them harmony at the first meeting," Palad says. "But by the performance, they were already singing in parts. They're willing to learn. They have that willingness and perseverance." Palad wasn't the only one surprised by the choir. I noticed a lot of people were sitting and standing taller after only a few weeks.

First Time’s the Charm for Local Soccer Champs

East Falls, we have a winner!

First Time's the Charm for Local Soccer Champs
In only its first year of existence, the East Falls traveling soccer team stormed through the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation League last year like Maradona through a B team defense (sorry, I imagine the kids these days prefer Ronaldo or Messi) and pulled off an upset win to take home the title for the 10 and under division in October.

A sucker for a sweet smile and a bad attitude hopes this time it'll be different in a short story about love in wintertime. "I'm never doing this again." Paul rubbed his hands together to circulate the blood. He cursed once, twice, thrice, swearing unprintable words about the bitter Philadelphia winter.

Lager, Our Hometown Brew

Lager vs. Ale:  What’s the difference?

    Lager, Our Hometown Brew
Strictly speaking, every beer is either a lager or an ale. Ales were here first, an ancient brew. Top-fermented, known for fruitiness, bitterness, and high alcohol content. Lagers are bottom-fermented, thanks to a special strain of yeast developed by Bavarian monks in the 1300's.

    When Oysters Were Peanuts
They sure loved their oysters at the Hohenadel Brewery on Indian Queen Lane. We found hundreds of shells at the site this morning, unearthed by a construction crew digging up the site of the old brewery for condominiums. That many fresh oysters would be worth thousands of dollars today at an upscale center city restaurant, but in 19 th century bars, oysters were the peanuts of the day.
