Shakey Graves at Union Transfer on 05/11/2018 08:30 PM EDT

1026 Spring Garden St.

    Shakey Graves - Tickets - Union Transfer - Philadelphia, PA - May 11th, 2018
Back in December 2017, Shakey Graves proclaimed on his Twitter page, "Next album. New sound. Sell your suspenders." The tweet was tongue-in-cheek, but Alejandro Rose-Garcia, the Austin native who's been plying his trade as Shakey Graves since 2007, was making a dead-serious point about his latest album, Can't Wake Up (Dualtone, out May 4).

Happy #NationalHandwritingDay! The holdings ...

Happy #NationalHandwritingDay! The holdings of the National Archives are brimming with hand-written records like this document, the Deposition of John Snyder. This document is the sworn statement of John Snyder regarding the events surrounding the assault of Garrik Hulsecamp by Ezikiel Teel. It comes from a criminal case file which consists of assault and battery charges brought against Ezekiel Teel for his alleged assault of a man by the name of Garrett Hulsecamp on his ship in October of 1790. You can learn more about this case, and see the handwriting up close, by visiting our online catalog: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/18545806. We know that last week’s Citizen Archivist Challenge is over, but that doesn’t mean you can’t continue the important work of unlocking history by transcribing and tagging our records! If you haven’t already, get started by visiting the Citizen Archivist Dashboard (https://www.archives.gov/citizen-archivist) to learn how to start and to find specific missions. Want to learn more about our holdings? You can check out our online catalog (www.catalog.archives.gov) and make an appointment to view our holdings at the National Archives at Philadelphia by calling (215) 305-2044 or emailing philadelphia.archives@nara.gov. Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Tickets - Union Transfer - Philadelphia, PA - April 28th, 2018
The threads of our past never unravel, they hover like invisible webs, occasionally glistening due to a sly angle of the sun. On Multi-Love, Unknown Mortal Orchestra frontman and multi-instrumentalist Ruban Nielson reflects on relationships: airy, humid longing, loss, the geometry of desire that occurs when three people align.

On this day in 1832, Édouard Manet was born. ...

On this day in 1832, Édouard Manet was born. The French painter faced a great deal of rejection in his early career, like many of the founding impressionists. The French Academy disliked Manet’s abstracted painting style as well as his disregard for classical tradition. #LOOKSLOWLY at “Young Woman in a Garden.” Note Manet’s penchant for flattened surfaces, bright colors, and gestural brushwork. See the white color of the woman’s glove and scarf? That’s actually the unpainted preparation layer for the canvas! The artist intentionally left this part of the canvas unpainted––a break from artistic tradition that scandalized many about Manet’s paintings. Later, his work became pivotal to the modernist movement. 🎨 Édouard Manet. Young Woman in a Garden (Jeune femme dans un jardin), 1879

"The story is related by the Narrator, a grownup version of the misguided Youth, with a distinct sense of irony... and a kinetic, eclectic score that ranges from gospel to punk rock." - The Philadelphia Inquirer

'Passing Strange' at the Wilma: Updated, rocking tale of Youth's quest for identity
Stew and Heidi Rodewald's "Passing Strange" at the Wilma Theater tells an often-told tale: The self-glorifying, distinctly unheroic artist-hero questing for his identity through changes of scene, sexual encounters that stop short of love, and the supposedly redemptive act of creation.

"Just as generations before us have done, it’s important that we also do our part." Great opinion piece from Evelina Bodon and Felicia Harris about getting involved within our communities.

Most neighborhood volunteers are seniors. The time is now for millennials to get involved | Opinion
These public spaces are gems and can be part of what makes living in a neighborhood so attractive; and they have only survived for so long because of the commitment of those few neighbors, many seniors, who are dedicated volunteers, advocates and members of friends of groups or recreation advisory councils.
