The Case for Raising the Roof on Philly Rowhouses
City dwellers are building up rather than moving out. And while the add-ons might wreck the rhythm of our rowhouse blocks, they beat the alternative. Maybe you know a Philly couple with this dilemma: They're thrilled with their rowhome but need a tad more space - maybe there's a kid on the way, or they're desperate for a home office.

Rasheedah Phillips : Managing Attorney of Community Legal Services: I joined with PACDC Policy Director Beth McConnell on an op-ed in Philly Inquirer about a new law that would create development of affordable housing units. In my. neighborhood (known as Brewerytown) community members have consistently been vocal at monthly community meetings about the want and need for affordable housing in our area so that long term community members and young families can have an opportunity to continue to live in and give back to North Philly. For me personally, I first moved to North Philly 15 years ago when i started as an undergrad at Temple and have intentionally chosen to come back to and stay in North Philly as both a renter and a homeowner. I bought my home 7 years ago next month in Brewerytown and as a young, single mother, first time homebuyer it was a struggle but it would have been next to impossible to buy that same house in 2017 or to be a working, parenting college student renting with the way property taxes, development, gentrification, home prices, rental prices have risen and proliferated. This is beyond necesssary and overdue and it is workable if we work together to make it so. I look forward to continuing to work with city council, housing advocates, developers, and community members to continue to support and develop these policies. Hit me up if you're interested in more info. http://www.philly.com/philly/opinion/commentary/affordable-housing-philadelphia-low-income-maria-quinones-sanchez-darrell-clarke-20171117.html http://www.philly.com/philly/opinion/commentary/affordable-housing-philadelphia-low-income-maria-quinones-sanchez-darrell-clarke-20171117.html

128 hours per week: That's how much a minimum-wage earner must work to afford a two-bedroom Philly apartment | Perspective
The hot real estate market contributes to rising rents and home prices that are pushing low-income and working-class people out of their old neighborhoods, and prevents them from finding housing in neighborhoods right for them. - Beth McConnell, Rasheedah Phillips, Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News

Why police haven't arrested the woman scamming Philly restaurants
According to multiple reports, the scammer who tries to trick people into refunding her cash for a non-existent to-go order - the same woman Billy Penn wrote about on Oct. 30 - is still out there trying to cop cash for meals she didn't have.

Home security? Some opposed to Domb's bill to securitize liens on tax deadbeats
WHAT WOULD "SECURITIZATION" DO? Domb proposes to securitize real estate tax liens. That would entail transferring all of the city-owned liens into a corporate entity or trust (created specifically for the securitization), which would then issue bonds - or debt securities, hence "securitization" - based on the anticipated income streams from those liens.

CVS launches Philly apprentice program to find more pharmacy techs
On construction sites, apprentice carpenters work side-by-side with journeyman pros. Now, CVS wants to take that same model to train pharmacy techs in Pennsylvania. In other states, pharmacy tech apprenticeship programs have reduced turnover, important in a tightening labor market.

For minorities, there's still inequality in the housing market
According to a study released by Zillow this year, less than a quarter of U.S. homeowners are minorities. That low number, experts say, is the result of discriminatory lending practices, financial hurdles, and troublesome market conditions. - Caitlin McCabe, Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News

New, easier-to-use SEPTA App offers real-time ETAs
SEPTA released a new mobile app Wednesday night. Called SEPTA beta, it's a major overhaul of SEPTA's oft-derided old app. Users will notice some big changes: A brand new interface, the ability to save "favorite" routes - like your daily commute - for easy access, and, probably most importantly of all, vehicle arrival time updates every 30 seconds.

Twenty four restaurants, markets and stores were closed temporarily by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health between Nov. 1 and Nov. 15. Inspectors were busy in the last two weeks citing food establishments for a myriad of offenses. It's fall and while leaves are dropping from trees, finding them on cheese is never a good thing.

SRC votes to dissolve, taking first step toward local control of schools
Many, including Mayor Kenney, have wondered aloud in the past if the dissolution of the SRC would damage relations with Harrisburg and imperil attempts at cooperation. Monson and Geary, however, said they noticed no change in lawmaker attitudes toward the formula change, even as the momentum gathered for local control.
