Poetry Corner

Thoughtful verses from a rocky trail in the Wissahickon.

    Poetry Corner
Musings at Wissahickon Creek Rock formations like naked bones of the earth. The skull exposed bumpy and gnarled no soil, no foliage washed clean by the constant water working a nerve like a mother's nagging.

Supermarket Sweep

One neighbor’s efforts to clean up a local grocery’s image is a win-win for the whole community.

    Supermarket Sweep
Facebook was in a flurry this spring with complaints about the new Chelten Market IGA that opened on Chelten Avenue last year. When Sharrieff Ali first read the posts, he was surprised the Health Department hadn't shut the place down! But according to public records, this store was violation-free.

Chestnut Hill: Death by Starbucks

Sounds like someone's dying for a coffee.

    Chestnut Hill: Death by Starbucks
There's a new guy at Starbucks, and he's obsessed with getting everyone's name right. He's also super friendly, and even though statistically speaking it's unlikely that he's a serial killer, because he's not a White Man, it makes me nervous. He's very polite, but a bit... Intensely nice.

Got That Swing

How local saxophonist, composer, and orchestra leader Jack Saint Clair found his rhythm.

    Got That Swing
Growing up in a family of athletes, Jack St. Clair was no jock. While his siblings excelled in competition, Jack "didn't have that gene" - his least favorite class in high school was gym which he almost failed once for not doing pushups.

EFDC would like to start a campaign to bring Indego bike share to East Falls. We have support from some developers and business owners and we already have a designated location for a docking station. The EFDC has met and corresponded with Indego bike share for the last couple of years but with no success. You can help this initiative and be part of the campaign by lobbying Philly's bike share program. Please consider doing the following: 1) Submit a message/letter of support to bring Indego bike share to East Falls. Go to: https://www.rideindego.com/about/contact/ 2) If you see any Indego bikes around East Falls, please snap a picture and submit it with your letter of support. Thank you so much for your help with this campaign!

8 of the Best Lowkey Beer Gardens in Philly to Grab a Drink and Relax For most a beer garden is an oasis where you mix and mingle with crowds while enjoying cold brews. However, with the explosion of beer gardens in Philly, many have become more of a frat party atmosphere than a place to vibe out and enjoy a brewski.

Social Justice Fuels New Neighborhood Book Club

    Resistance Reading
It goes without saying that there has been a shift in many of our lives since November 2016. After the election, many Philadelphians felt a need to get involved in our community, learn more, and help inspire positive social change. In September 2017 this exact desire led to the creation of The East Falls Social Justice Book Club.

A Farm Grows in Germantown

Kitchen Garden’s Amanda Staples talks about the successes and challenges of urban farming.

    A Farm Grows in Germantown
"I don't really hate groundhogs," says Amanda Staples about her farm's number one produce predator. "I wouldn't even mind them if they didn't have such expensive taste." Like fine diners, they insist on only the best part of the farm's lettuce, boring out the tender center of each head, while leaving the rest of it to rot.

The Wanamaker Tower at St. James School Rings True After Tuneup

    Right on Chime
After 110 years, the Wanamaker Bell Tower in the St. James church graveyard still needs some major repairs - but at least its chimes are back in tune. David Kasievich, Head of St. James School, led an effort in May to restore the chimes as the first part of a larger restoration of the Tower and mausoleum.

The East Falls Town Watch discourages crime by keeping the neighborhood as free of graffiti, trash, outed lights, bandit signs, abandoned vehicles, and panhandlers as possible. By taking turns patrolling, members identify troubled spots that could use some repair and TLC.

This Old Barn

A charming piece of East Falls history gets a facelift as we dig into the property's storied past.

    This Old Barn
This historic barn on JeffU's campus goes "topless" for the next few weeks as it undergoes $300k+ in upgrades, including repointed walls, new rafters, and a new roof. The barn will still need further improvements before it's fully restored, but this first phase is a big step towards preserving this unique structure from the early 19th century.

Buddhist Blessings on the Falls Bridge

Imagine all the people, sharing all the world.

Buddhist Blessings on the Falls Bridge
The colorful flags seen recently on the Falls Bridge aren't mere decoration, but an ancient Buddhist tradition for invoking peace, compassion and harmony. While associated today with Tibetan Buddhists, the practice of printing prayers on cloth flags has its roots in India.
