An update to the severe thunderstorm forecast today. Thunderstorms are likely early this afternoon into this evening across our region starting from west to east. Thunderstorm coverage is likely further south towards Delmarva than it was earlier this morning. There are two main hazards with these storms: flash flooding and damaging winds. Flash flooding: Any thunderstorms today will be capable of producing very heavy rain which could lead to flash flooding. The highest risk for flash flooding is along the I-95 corridor in southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey where a flash flood watch is in effect. Urban areas and other areas with poor drainage are especially vulnerable to flash flooding. Damaging Winds: Some of the storms could be severe capable of producing damaging winds through much of the forecast area, though the highest risk for this threat is along and near the I-95 Corridor. For the latest detailed forecast and radar imagery for your location, visit www.weather.gov/phi.

The combination of temperatures in the lower 90s and high humidity values this afternoon will produce heat indices in the upper 90s for many locations. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible this afternoon and evening, especially for areas along and north of I-95. A cold front is expected to move through the region late Tuesday bringing much more widespread showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours. These storms may be strong to severe and produce heavy rainfall. Stay cool out there!

Here is a visible satellite image from 7:47 pm, with the sun beginning to lower in the western sky. If you look closely, you can see the long shadow cast by a cumulonimbus cloud located to the north of Scranton. The shadow extends all the way to northern New Jersey. The yellow arrows point to the shadow.

Early afternoon weather update: A band of moderate rain with a few rumbles of thunder is pushing out of southeastern PA and making its way through central and southern NJ and the northern half of Delmarva. This activity will continue over the next few hours before weakening and pushing offshore. There will remain a slight chance of showers through the evening, especially in areas that clear out quickly this afternoon.
