An Appetite for a New Challenge - Friends of Wissahickon
by Laura Feragen Over the last decade Jacqueline and Aaron Burger have been going to Wissahickon Valley park as many weekends as possible. But since joining the 2017 All Trails Challenge (ATC) this fall as Team Veggie Burgers, they, along with dog Rosie, have hiked more trails than ever before.

Challenge Yourself for a Change - Friends of Wissahickon
by Laura Feragen For many people, Wissahickon Valley Park is a place they visit time after time. Joann Hyle was not one of those people; she rarely visited the park. But motivated by the need for an alternative to her daily gym routine, Joann signed up for the All Trails Challenge (ATC).

Reaching Out to Little Friends

Philadelphia has one of the greatest park systems in the U.S., and yet many of our residents are either unaware of or disconnected from our public green spaces. In response to this problem, FOW is launching a pilot program, Little Friends of the Wissahickon, to introduce Philadelphia’s public school kindergartners and first graders to Wissahickon Valley Park and inspire them to explore and experience the wilderness in their own city.

Challenge Yourself to Give Thanks

If you ask Gene Bishop to name her favorite trail in the Wissahickon, she’ll tell you it’s like asking her about her favorite season to walk there: It’s hard for her to choose, because her favorite thing about the Wissahickon is that it’s always changing.

FOW Needs You!

When you become a volunteer with Friends of the Wissahickon, you get back as much as you give to the park. Through FOW volunteer programs, you will meet and work with others who care about the Wissahickon as much as you do. Together you will learn more about the park—its history, geology, wildlife, plants, and more—which will enhance your experience of the Wissahickon. FOW volunteers provide critical support needed to protect, preserve, and enhance Wissahickon Valley Park.

Need Motivation to Complete the All Trails Challenge?

Try the Four Corners method developed by Matt Palombaro and Christopher Moore, from Wyndmoor. Moore has always lived near Wissahickon Valley Park—if you don’t count his college years and a few years in central New York State—and started running in his late twenties. Moore began running in the Wissahickon in 2001 and was introduced to trail running by the Wissahickon Wanderers, through which he met his wife (who runs trails and ultras), and became one of its longest continuously tenured members. He went on to compete in 50- to 100-mile races, but says those days are mostly behind him. Now the 44-year-old small-scale design/building contractor (and former architect) lives near the park in Roxborough and can be seen most weekend mornings in the Wissahickon with his wife and Australian shepherd, Scout. FOW’s Outreach Manager Sarah Marley had the chance to interview him recently. Below are some highlights from the interview.

Gardening and Yard Maintenance for Human and Environmental Health

With fall upon us, we turn our focus to the gas-powered leaf blowers, weed trimmers, and lawn mowers. Many of us want to run in the other direction every time these machines are powered up. Although some claim these tools add a measure of convenience to landscape management, the high level of noise and air pollution they emit has been well documented. These all-too-familiar yard tools generate air and noise pollution around our neighborhoods, schools, and public spaces, while interrupting the quiet enjoyment of our neighborhoods. Residents in some municipalities (none that we are aware of in Pennsylvania) have even fought for, and won, measures to regulate or replace these machines entirely. (Read this, too!)
