The Barnes Foundation added 2 new photos.

How fast can you name #5womenartists? For #WomensHistoryMonth, we’ve joined National Museum of Women in the Arts to raise awareness about women’s artistic achievements, starting with our very own Barnes staff. Meet Jihan Thomas, Outreach Coordinator for school programs. Jihan’s artistic practice includes painting, drawing, ceramics, and other mixed media. Her work is inspired by the patterns of life and is devoted to “reestablishing the visual conversation with our souls,” which she describes as “something that only the individual can recognize.” Of her work, Jihan says it expresses symbolism, synergy and figurative imagery. “I use all colors to communicate with my viewer.” What is her favorite work by a female artist in the Barnes collection? “I love the Navajo pottery. I am trained in Nigerian and Ghanaian pottery tradition, so I respond very strongly to their work and have a deep respect for their process. In many cultures, women played a predominant role in the art of pottery.” Look for our collection of Navajo pottery in the Lower Level Lobby. What advice would she give to young female artists? “My advice would be the hardest thing to do: just create. As artists, we can sometimes create our own chaos by prioritizing public recognition like getting into Artnews. Just create regularly and have fun. We need your perspective. The world needs ours.”
