Enjoy the winners of this years’ Comedy Wildlife Photo Awards. http://n.pr/2AqCQdm

Here Come The Penitent Penguins: The Comedy Wildlife Photo Awards Are Back
Penitent penguins. A seal aghast. A turbocharged wigeon, a vain gnu and a kickboxing kangaroo. The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards are back. This year's winners were announced Thursday morning. The annual awards are "ingeniously titled to avoid any confusion," according to their website, and recognize images that are "light-hearted, upbeat, possibly unpretentious and mainly about wildlife doing funny things."

On this day in 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright successfully piloted an airplane for the first time in human history ushering in the age of flight. Housed in the collections of The Franklin Institute are numerous objects and documents related to the Wright Brothers and one of their original Flyers. One of the most interesting of these items is this document, an early pencil sketch that the brothers created as they were devising the machine. http://bit.ly/1mlWqQi Support the conservation of these objects by supporting the Franklin Fund. Scientists are studying several thousand golden retrievers in an attempt to get a much broader understanding of the health and biology of all dogs. http://wapo.st/2Aq1xX4

How 3,000 very good golden retrievers could help all dogs live longer
Most dogs get poked and prodded at the veterinarian's office. Piper, a 4-year-old golden retriever in Chicago, gets far more scrutiny than that. Her annual checkup this month took three hours. Her flaxen hair was trimmed and bagged, her toenails clipped and kept, her bodily fluids collected.

On January 31, 2018, the Rosenbach will host a screening of the classic horror film NOSFERATU, with live organ accompaniment by Frederick R. Haas. Conceived as a companion program to our Frankenstein and Dracula exhibition, this spooky cinematic event will give us a chance to experience another gothic monster in this critically acclaimed and beautifully visualized film--which, incidentally, is lifted almost whole cloth from Bram Stoker's DRACULA. This blog post explores the connections between the Stoker estate, the Rosenbach, NOSFERATU, and our unusual off-site event.

    The Destruction of Nosferatu
On January 31, 2018, the Rosenbach will host a screening of the classic horror film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror , with Frederick R. Haas accompanying the movie on the organ at Macy's.

Who else is digging The Decemberists and Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Ben Franklin's Song?" We love it and, as the home of The Benjamin Franklin National Memorial, thought it would be good to break down the lyrics a little bit for this #FranklinFriday. Enjoy our analysis: http://bit.ly/2Bs006K

    Unpacking "Ben Franklin's Song"
On December 15, 2017, The Decemberists released "Ben Franklin's Song," the lyrics of which were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and originally intended to be used in the hit musical Hamilton. This song provides some great insights on Franklin's accomplishments, so, here are 3 things that are correct about "Ben Franklin's Song," one thing that is probably correct and one thing that is decidedly incorrect.

New research on the elusive silky anteater, which is native to parts of South and Central America has revealed that there are, in fact, six distinct species instead of just one as was previously thought. http://bit.ly/2CayND4

Six New Tiny Anteater Species Found-Hiding in Plain Sight
The first clue was the fur. While studying silky anteaters in Brazil, biologist Flávia Miranda "began to see differences between the colors of the population of the Amazon and the Atlantic forest," she recalls. There was just one recognized species- Cyclopes didactylus -but she wondered if these little-known tree-dwellers might qualify as two separate species.

1900 Market St., Philadelphia (a non-fuel store): More than 7,000 square feet

Largest Wawa ever opens in D.C., but chain still has big plans for Philly
A string trio played in front of the juice-and-yogurt case and hungry customers waited in a line that stretched down the street at the grand opening of Wawa's first location in Washington, D.C., Thursday morning. "We are Wawa!" shouted the crowd of people who had been waiting in line at least 90 minutes before the store's 8 a.m.
