The Case for Raising the Roof on Philly Rowhouses
City dwellers are building up rather than moving out. And while the add-ons might wreck the rhythm of our rowhouse blocks, they beat the alternative. Maybe you know a Philly couple with this dilemma: They're thrilled with their rowhome but need a tad more space - maybe there's a kid on the way, or they're desperate for a home office.

Rasheedah Phillips : Managing Attorney of Community Legal Services: I joined with PACDC Policy Director Beth McConnell on an op-ed in Philly Inquirer about a new law that would create development of affordable housing units. In my. neighborhood (known as Brewerytown) community members have consistently been vocal at monthly community meetings about the want and need for affordable housing in our area so that long term community members and young families can have an opportunity to continue to live in and give back to North Philly. For me personally, I first moved to North Philly 15 years ago when i started as an undergrad at Temple and have intentionally chosen to come back to and stay in North Philly as both a renter and a homeowner. I bought my home 7 years ago next month in Brewerytown and as a young, single mother, first time homebuyer it was a struggle but it would have been next to impossible to buy that same house in 2017 or to be a working, parenting college student renting with the way property taxes, development, gentrification, home prices, rental prices have risen and proliferated. This is beyond necesssary and overdue and it is workable if we work together to make it so. I look forward to continuing to work with city council, housing advocates, developers, and community members to continue to support and develop these policies. Hit me up if you're interested in more info. http://www.philly.com/philly/opinion/commentary/affordable-housing-philadelphia-low-income-maria-quinones-sanchez-darrell-clarke-20171117.html http://www.philly.com/philly/opinion/commentary/affordable-housing-philadelphia-low-income-maria-quinones-sanchez-darrell-clarke-20171117.html

Home security? Some opposed to Domb's bill to securitize liens on tax deadbeats
WHAT WOULD "SECURITIZATION" DO? Domb proposes to securitize real estate tax liens. That would entail transferring all of the city-owned liens into a corporate entity or trust (created specifically for the securitization), which would then issue bonds - or debt securities, hence "securitization" - based on the anticipated income streams from those liens.

These Philly schoolkids marched against injustice 50 years ago, and police responded with nightsticks. Today, they inspire a new generation
"The clubs were going in every direction," said an adult organizer of the walkout to bring reforms and more awareness of black students' concerns. Then-Police Commissioner Frank Rizzo ordered more than 100 men in full riot gear to charge students who had been largely peaceful. "The kids were helpless."
