Thursday night was the big one for a lot of the students at Frankford High School as family, friends, alumni and the public streamed into the main entrance to take in the presentations. The Program was well organized and used all of the first floor of the main building for every kind of display and performance starting at 5 PM.

Once you work in the education field, you never ever retire because teaching and learning becomes a part of who you are. It was a real pleasure as well as refreshing to meet Jessica Hasben, the CEO of Qor Charter School. Once you meet Jessica, too, you’ll find that she does indeed have that passion for children and their education that you, too, become a believer and hope that she does indeed succeed.

Winter Reading Challenge: December 15, 2017 through February 28, 2018 Beginning December 15, 2017, the Free Library will host an all ages online Winter Reading Challenge. The program encourages participants to continue reading all winter long, and also provides ideas for other fun activities. How do I sign-up? Visit https://freelibrary.beanstack.org on or after December 15 to sign-up. If you already have a Beanstack account, you simply need to sign-in and then register for the 2018 Winter Reading Challenge for your age group. How does the program work? Earn points and badges for reading and doing activities this winter! For every 100 minutes you read, you will earn 100 points. Activities earn 100 points as well. There are suggested point-based goals for each age group, or you can make your own goal! Is there a prize? Yes! For every 100 points you earn, you will receive 1 entry into a raffle for a mystery fun pack! One mystery fun pack will be given out for each age group. Winners will be contacted by March 15, 2018.

You can get a really good pretzel, right here in Frankford. It’s up at 5331 Oxford Avenue. Pretzel Works has been there a long time baking pretzels and bagels for commercial customers. Mike Naselsky, the owner, decided to open up a storefront window for people to buy retail and I stopped by to see what was happening.

The Frankford CDC is excited and honored to be one of this year’s recipients of the PECO Green Region grant! This funding will go toward completing the Frankford Pause Park.

On Saturday December 2nd, the 15th District PDAC (Police District Advisory Council) held its annual holiday meal to thank and honor the police officers of the 2nd and 15th District. Coordinating this special event was Pete Specos, Treasurer of the 15th PDAC.
Ginger Rogers won the Oscar for her performance in the title role of the 1940 Movie “Kitty Foyle” about the star crossed love between a girl from Frankford and the son of an aristocratic Main Line Family. The book upon which the movie is based, written by Christopher Morley, contained much coverage of her early years in Frankford but that part of the story line did not make it to the screen.
The Frankford NAC will meet on Thursday, December 13 at 7 pm at 4667 Paul Street.

There is an interesting story on Philadelphia Neighborhoods about the fluctuations in enrollment at Our Lady of Port Richmond School. Will parents pay more to send their children to what they see as better schools? Does the presence of those better school choices attract families to a neighborhood?
Frankford High School will be holding its 1st Annual Coffee House on Thursday December 14th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The night will consist of work from all classes from the Arts Department. These works of art will include screening of short films, photography assignments, drawings, ceramic pieces, musical performances, and short skits.
The Frankford Garden Club will host a Holiday Greens Workshop on Monday, December 11 from 10:00 am to Noon at The Daral Building. This has been an annual event held by the club.

Councilman Oh stopped by the Northwood Civic meeting on November 21st and talked about his proposed legislation to help homeowners who have been victimized by squatters. The system at present is an embarrassment in that squatters essential have a green light to steal you home.
