Fiercely contested school choice bill on the move in Harrisburg
Legislation is on the move in Harrisburg that could give parents more school choices and siphon millions from traditional public schools. Imagine if your child lived in a neighborhood with a poorly-ranked school and so Pennsylvania gave you money to pay for private school or other educational expenses.

Cassatt attended the PAFA The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts here in Philadelphia before moving to Paris where she lived and worked for many years. In Paris, she had close relationships with many of the impressionists including Berthe Morisot and Edgar #Degas. Overview

Philadelphia Museum of Art - Exhibitions - Agnes Martin: The Untroubled Mind/Works from the Daniel W. Dietrich II Collection
Visionary and idiosyncratic, Agnes Martin (1912-2004) aimed to express universal emotional states in her precise compositions. This intimate installation explores the ideas that shaped Agnes Martin's minimalist art, and reflects upon her enduring friendship with longtime supporter Daniel W. Dietrich II. In addition to paintings, it features drawings, a sculpture, and archival materials.

On this day in 1471, Albrecht Dürer was born ...

On this day in 1471, Albrecht Dürer was born in Nuremberg, Germany. Dürer is considered the most influential artist of the Northern Renaissance. An innovative printmaker and painter, Dürer produced works that inspired many subsequent artists throughout history. #LOOKSLOWLY at this oil painting in the Barnes collection, created by an unknown 17th-century artist who combined multiple compositions originally drafted by Dürer. Although small in scale, “Saint Jerome and the Lion” contains a vast amount of detail. The rugged cliffs are filled with nooks and crannies; a church is located atop the cliffs; and off in the horizon a paradisiacal castle appears to float on the water. In a reduced palette of browns, the artist captures the humility and simplicity that characterize the hermitic Saint Jerome, who is pictured in the foreground with a book, cross, and his companionate lion. On your next visit, look for this piece in room 4 and search for these small details: a bluebell plant in the foreground (bluebells have long been associated with humility and everlasting love), a lizard on the cliff by the saint’s outstretched hand, and tiny ships on the water’s horizon. 🎨 After Albrecht Dürer. “Saint Jerome and the Lion,” probably first half of the 16th century

The fact that City Hall was constructed in a ...

The fact that City Hall was constructed in a residential neighborhood still amazes me. This photo depicts the various properties that surrounded City Hall at the time. They included houses and apartment buildings. This became a commercial area shorty after City Hall was completed. Construction started in 1871 and was completed by 1901. It took 30 to construct City Hall and by the time it was finished it was out of style and over budget at $24 million dollars. This photo was taken in 1881. Can you imagine 30 years of noise and dust from somebody constructing the tallest and largest building in the world, right in your neighborhood? It was the tallest building in the world at one time. At 548 ft, including the statue of city founder William Penn atop its tower, City Hall was the tallest habitable building in the world from 1894 to 1908. It remained the tallest in Pennsylvania until it was surpassed in 1932 by the Gulf Tower in Pittsburgh. It was the tallest in Philadelphia until 1986 when the construction of One Liberty Place surpassed it, ending the informal gentlemen's agreement that had limited the height of buildings in the city to no higher than the Penn statue. It was also the first secular building to have this distinction, as all previous world's tallest buildings were religious structures, including European cathedrals and for the previous 3,800 years the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Happy birthday to Henri Rousseau, a French Post-Impressionist painter best known for his vibrant jungle scenes. Interestingly, despite his prolific painting of jungle scenes, Rousseau never set foot in a real jungle, but rather drew inspiration from botanical gardens in Paris, taxidermied animals, illustrated books, and stories relayed by soldiers who had served during the French expedition to Mexico.
