Stoneleigh: A Natural Garden, @stoneleighnaturalgarden one of our neighboring gardens in @americasgardencapital, needs our help. The Lower Merion School District informed @natlands, the garden’s owners, last month that it is considering a proposal to seize the garden to build a new school or playing fields. We are surprised and dismayed this could happen after a multi-year, multi-million-dollar renovation to bring more open space to our region. The donation of the John and Chara Haas property, an extraordinary act of generosity, had a singular purpose: to open Stoneleigh up to the general public, so that everyone could enjoy this national and natural treasure free of charge. Gardens like @morrisarboretum and Stoneleigh play an important role in our communities, and offer more than just beauty and respite. In addition to supporting 1,500 jobs, a new study shows that our region’s public gardens collectively generate substantial economic benefits—an estimated $256 million a year. As a fellow public garden, we stand with Stoneleigh and support the efforts being made to keep the garden open. The Origins of Morris Arboretum & The Mansion From Which It Bloomed
On the eve of the Great Depression a man and a woman got into a heated discussion in Philadelphia. No one was close enough to overhear, but from all indications they were arguing about a piece of property. The man, Fiske Kimball, was the impresario of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and a zealous architectural historian.
