Have you noticed that the outdoor seating plaza outside Malelani Cafe Mt. Airy has been torn up this week? That's actually a good thing - it's the fourth of six pocket parks coming together on Germantown Avenue courtesy of the Mt. Airy Business Improvement District. You may have noticed the improvements on the corner of Germantown & Sedgwick outside the Mt. Airy Playground, and you've probably seen the new landscaping and Little Free Library outside of Fino's on the corner of Carpenter Lane. On Tuesday, come out to the original - Trolley Car Park, between the SEPTA brake yard and Mermaid Lounge - for a reception and fundraiser for the pocket parks to learn more. There's no obligation to donate, but donations help to add amenities like benches, tables, and the like.

Herbicides at Carpenters Woods

I live across the street from Carpenter's Woods, along the Thumb.

I find it curious that, to contain invasive plants at Carpenter's Woods, an herbicide is sprayed whose active ingredient, triclopyr acid, offers "mild toxicity to birds" and which kills non-invasive plants, while killing and/or toxifying the berries that surround the Thumb, that birds eat.

Last summer three little signs were posted at the Thumb which were not sufficient to warn my landlady, her dog, and myself that walking the sidewalk might cause irritation to skin or eyes. Both of which happened.

Perhaps others were affected, too.

As an ecologist who has taught at two universities, I am not yet convinced that destroying invasives at the perimeter of this park is of greater benefit to biodiversity here than the damage that may be caused to birds, berries, and people here.
