Young Heroes Outreach Begins Action Phase

NLM’s year-long Young Heroes Outreach Program, which takes the Museum’s lessons on civic leadership directly into schools, is now entering the phase when the students choose a social issue that matters to them and plan Action Steps to address that issue. Students in the seventeen schools NLM currently serves have been brainstorming and researching issues for the past several weeks. Their breadth of knowledge and commitment is truly impressive. The students have been considering  a wide range of topics from bullying to gerrymandering. The following seven schools have made their decisions. A formal presentation of each school’s social issue will take place at our annual Young Heroes Impact Celebration on June 2 at Girard College. Watch for event information on this website.

Now, more than ever, there's a strong call-to-action to press forward and progress gender parity. There's a strong call to #PressforProgress motivating and uniting friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive. Join us at Toasted Walnut to learn about the women's programming at William Way LGBT Community Center. This is a fund and friend raiser - attendees will be able to sign-up or renew their annual community center memberships, network, and learn about the programming planned for this year. Thanks to Toasted Walnut, our host for the evening, for offering complimentary snacks and drink specials. ABOUT WILLIAM WAY LGBT COMMUNITY CENTER: The William Way Community Center encourages, supports, and advocates for the well-being and acceptance of sexual and gender minorities in the Greater Philadelphia region through service, recreational, educational, and cultural programming. Membership in the center begins at just $50 a year, and carries many benefits. From discounts on Center activities to access to the Center's DVD library, your membership not only pays for itself quickly, but also supports so many of the life-saving and life-affirming programs at the Center. http://www.waygay.org/membership/ ABOUT INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY (IWD) 2017: Every person - women, men and non-binary people - can play a part in helping drive better outcomes for women. Through meaningful celebration and targeted bold action, we can all be responsive and responsible leaders in creating a more gender inclusive world. The World Economic Forum predicts the gender gap won't close entirely until 2186. This is too long to wait. So around the world, IWD provides an important opportunity for ground breaking action that will truly drive greater change for women. https://www.internationalwomensday.com/ ABOUT TOASTED WALNUT SPECIALS: Toasted Walnut is once again hosting us offering complimentary passed snacks, $6 apps and build your own Mac & Cheese; $4 Happy Hour (well brand mixed drinks and all beers); $6 Wines and $6 Tito's from 5-7:30 pm. Please join Juntos & Galaei Phillyi Monday morning at 11:30 for a press conference/rally to demand that ICE #FreeIvan and allows him to be reunited with his husband. On January 31, Jose “Ivan” Nuñez was attending his marriage interview at USCIS with his husband Paul fully expecting to be in and out of the office. Paul and Ivan are in love and have been married since April 9th, 2016. What should have been a dream come true ended in a nightmare. In the middle of his interview ICE agents stormed into the interview and handcuffed him without warning. We believe that love has no borders and ask you to join us in demanding that ICE free Ivan from detention so he may be reunited with his husband. If Ivan was to be deported back to Mexico, Ivan’s life would be in jeopardy due to his sexuality. His sister, who is also queer, is currently in hiding with her partner back home and close friends of the family have been severely assaulted for their sexual orientation. As of January 13th, USCIS has deemed Ivan and Paul’s marriage petition valid and Ivan has passed his Reasonable Fear interview, meaning there is no reason why he should still be in detention.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Today’s post comes fr...

Happy Valentine’s Day! Today’s post comes from the Allegheny National Forest (ANF), Pennsylvania’s only National Forest. This photograph was taken in August 1926 and shows two lovers on the trail to Heart’s Content near Warren, PA. At this site in particular, the U.S. Forest Service conducted a series of experiments and ecological studies that focused on developing new methods to protect America’s beautiful wealth of land. A few examples of the new sustainability concepts introduced at ANF in the 1920s included preserving seeds for future growth, maintaining watersheds, and guarding wildlife habitats. The purpose of this mission was to create a long lasting and healthy forest, one that generations to come could all explore and enjoy. So on this day dedicated to love, show your affection to not only the people you care about, but the places you appreciate too! This post was written by Megan Kelly, Research and Writing Intern at the National Archives at Philadelphia. #happyvalentinesday #valentine #valentinesday #alleghenynationalforest #ANF #forest #love #hisory #archives Citation: Photograph from Heart's Content Trail; Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, Timber Management Research Station; RG095 U.S. Forest Service; National Archives at Philadelphia (NAID: 28208828) and (HMS ID/Record Entry ID: PH-3926).
