Right on Chime

The Wanamaker Tower at St. James School Rings True After Tuneup

    Right on Chime
After 110 years, the Wanamaker Bell Tower in the St. James church graveyard still needs some major repairs - but at least its chimes are back in tune. David Kasievich, Head of St. James School, led an effort in May to restore the chimes as the first part of a larger restoration of the Tower and mausoleum.

Town Watch Round Up

Roberta Ginsberg's got the skinny on the crew helping East Falls stay safe and clean.

    Town Watch Round Up
The East Falls Town Watch discourages crime by keeping the neighborhood as free of graffiti, trash, outed lights, bandit signs, abandoned vehicles, and panhandlers as possible. By taking turns patrolling, members identify troubled spots that could use some repair and TLC.

On the Road to Healthy Pets

Vetter Mobile Pet Care comes to NW Philly with high hopes (and a little trepidation).

On the Road to Healthy Pets
I consider myself somewhat brave. I will kill a spider on the ceiling. I will go down into the basement when the light is burned out. I even watched the movie "It" while I was alone. But, I am currently dealing with an issue that is testing my courage and I am worried that I might not be so brave after all.

This is why our organization, East Falls Forward, exists. We will make information available via email, but here is your opportunity to be informed LIVE! Zoning Meeting Wednesday, June 20, 7 pm Tuttleman Auditorium Jefferson/Philadelpia University School House Lane & Vaux St (This is a new venue.) AGENDA ITEMS INCL: 1) The legalization of a long existing multifamily building (four units) located at 3502 Ainslie Street. There are four units in the property. One apartment on the first floor, two on the second, and one on the third. The building is configured as a four family dwelling, each unit with kitchens, bathrooms and sleeping areas in each apartment. 2) Penn Charter's baseball field project will be discussed as they have received a refusal from the City and seek a variance in order to initiate construction sooner than later. This project includes the demolition of the former JEVs property located just past Fox Lane off School House Lane (SHL) on the Wissahickon side of SHL and the conversion of that area plus part of the existing athletic fields into a new ballfield as well as parking. We reviewed detailed information on the project at our May Meeting and can review again should it be desired.

This Old Barn

A charming piece of East Falls history gets a facelift as we dig into the property's storied past.

    This Old Barn
This historic barn on JeffU's campus goes "topless" for the next few weeks as it undergoes $300k+ in upgrades, including repointed walls, new rafters, and a new roof. The barn will still need further improvements before it's fully restored, but this first phase is a big step towards preserving this unique structure from the early 19th century.

Buddhist Blessings on the Falls Bridge

Imagine all the people, sharing all the world.

Buddhist Blessings on the Falls Bridge
The colorful flags seen recently on the Falls Bridge aren't mere decoration, but an ancient Buddhist tradition for invoking peace, compassion and harmony. While associated today with Tibetan Buddhists, the practice of printing prayers on cloth flags has its roots in India.

Fatherless Father’s Day

Of memories and moving on: how our fathers continue to inspire us even after they've gone.

    Fatherless Father's Day
(Original post 6/5/18 on authorlarrybenjamin.blogspot.com) I remember the accident as if it was yesterday. I had been living in Washington, D.C. for three years. That particular morning, a Saturday, I was running late for work. It was a gray, wet morning at the edge of Winter.
