One of Night Market Philadelphia's main goals is to support the immigrant business owners who make our city's mobile food scene so delicious. For a second year in a row, we will be highlighting local food entrepreneurs in this season's lineup! The original QuakerDiner was opened in 1939 by a German family at 19th and Spring Garden. Several decades later, it moved to the Northeast and was purchased by Simo Kastanos' father in 1976, who immigrated to Philadelphia from Greece shortly after the end of WWII. Since then, the business has been owned and operated by the Kastanos family for over 40 years, serving up diner classics with a Greek twist. Quaker Diner has since been passed down to Simo, and his children Tina and Tony plan on becoming third generation owners one day. According to Simo, Burholme is "strong, diverse...a mix of everything", and they try to give back to the community whenever possible, whether it's donating food to local churches and the Burholme Civic Association or getting involved in the Christmas fundraiser with the Police Athletic League. His must-try dish? Any of their mouthwatering cheesecakes! Don't forget to seek out Quaker Diner (7241 Rising Sun Ave.) during Night Market Burholme on May 17!
We are closing at 4:30 today due to excessive heat.
