Enough is enough. If anyone has any information that could help bring this family justice, you can report it to the 3rd Police District anonymously. We went door to door in the neighborhood around 12th & Fitzwater yesterday afternoon in a pubic safety walk to support neighbors with direct access to resources and let them know they’re not alone and not hostages in their homes, after a 16yr old lost his life to gun violence last week. Some of the organizations that came out to be supportive were the Mayor’s Office of Violence Prevention, DA’s Office & Young Chances Foundation, CeasefirePA, 3rd Police District and advisory council members from the neighborhood, Moms Bonded by Grief, Institute for Development of African American Youth and young men in the program, Hawthorne Empowerment Coalition and community members, and National Workforce Opportunity Network. Bringing access to public safety resources, victims services and support, employment opportunities and programs for young people, and a network of community members looking to help. I’m encouraged to see a community come together like yesterday, but I wish it wasn’t because we lost another young man to senseless gun violence in our streets #putthegunsdown #thisisntnormal

Victim's family, neighbors send message about gun violence
For the last 10 years, Gwendolyn Toler had come to see Samir Walker as family. The 16-year-old spent summer days playing basketball with her grandson at the Palumbo playground on 9th Street in South Philadelphia. And he had grown so fond of her granddaughter that recently she heard the two talking about going to their junior prom together next year.

This week, Mx. Rogers comes to the neighborhood.

Philly's queer cabaret examines the truths (and myths) of Mister Rogers' signature kindness
The first black-and-white frames of Morgan Neville's Won't You Be My Neighbor show the familiar Fred Rogers at the piano, coolly attempting to place value and meaning on his approach to communicating with children by way of modulation. As a trained classical composer, he knew that some key changes could be managed with ease, and others could not.

We are all disheartened to hear of the recent...

We are all disheartened to hear of the recent events that occurred at 12th & Fitzwater on Friday evening. Another senseless shooting claimed the life of a 16-years old, young man and injured a 12-year old boy. Members of the Friends have been in touch with Lt. Goodson and the PPD. Over the past few months, our area has fallen victim to a number violent incidents which have not only put our communities at risk but claimed the lives of young people. Hawthorne has now had 4 shooting victims over the past month and 6 shooting victims since January 2018. This community has had much peace and tranquility over the past several years, free from of a violent crime. We have been informed that the area is continuing to receive high levels of support from the local, state, and federal partners who are working diligently to support the 3rd District and South Street Detail to identify and prosecute all parties involved as well promote ongoing Public Safety. The Police & Friends of the Police Mini Station are urging the support of all the community members to support the Police efforts. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Philadelphia Police. In the next few days the Friends of the South Street Police Mini-Station will be taking the led in the organizing of a prayer/community vigil to show solidarity in support of Hawthorne and those grieving. More information to follow.
