Northeast Bakery Returns to South Philly Roots

When Lipkin moved the bakery to its 8013 Castor Ave. location in 1975, most of the Jews near the original spot had moved.

This article has 2 other Philadelphia locations (Show)

The exterior of the soon-to-be second location of Lipkin’s Bakery at 2153 South Hancock St. | Facebook/Lipkin’s Bakery

While it’s technically a new location, it’s not a new neighborhood for the kosher bakery, which will still uphold kosher standards. Its original location before it moved to Rhawnhurst 43 years ago was at Fourth and McKean streets.

Northeast Bakery Returns to South Philly Roots - Jewish Exponent
If you live in Northeast Philly and find yourself in need of a good rye bread or challah, or perhaps some rugelach or hamantaschen, or maybe you just have a hankering for some cookies, chances are you'd head over to Lipkin's Bakery. Well, soon, if you live in South Philadelphia, you'll get that chance, too ...

Our Assosiation is not an appendage of City H...

Our Assosiation is not an appendage of City Hall! I want to respectfully make it as clear as I can. We have worked in our community to protect and promote a safer ; cleaner; purer and wholesome environment for all of our residents. Zoning- These " meetings/ hearing" while we as a group hash out something which "might" benifit or " might not" benifit us; should never devide us as a community! The ZBA implements and ajudicates the laws as they apply to each zoning issue. When a current " idea" or desire of a business or resident does not meet these regulations we are asked to provide a forum for a meeting. The meeting isn't to discuss the operations of the presenter! The meeting is to address the REASONS listed on the REFUSAL! Why you like someone or something is very important to you. However if our " personal desires" aren't listed on the REFUSAL ; they aren't the topic of dicusion. Example; An icecream store wants to open up on Castor Ave. They are Refused because the zoning laws require a parking lot; which doesn't exist. We are presented to see if WE ; as a community ( Assiciation) would be " WILLING to overlook the absence of a parking lot and suggest.... Yes SUGGEST they be allowed to open. " will you serve vanilla ?" " will children eat your icecream?" " will people throw trash on the ground?" And best yet... " I've eaten there icecream for 49 years it's the best!!!" Folks the REFUSAL was for Parking!!! If a parking lot existed the store would be open already! At our last meeting business owners pushed for a vote. Why???? They want customers!!! Currently a Corperation which is the owner of an adjacent property ; while protocol for notice was instituted; the Corperate office was never forwarded the information. Simply ; if we rush; if we are pushed; if we aren't focused and diligent we are wasting resources that could better serve our community.
