The 2018 Teacher as Hero Award nominations have come to a close, and we want to thank everyone who sent in a submission. We received over 60 nominations this year from across the Greater Philadelphia Region and even as far away as California! The stories we learned about these teachers are both inspiring and heartwarming. This year’s 11 finalists exemplify educators who are going above and beyond in their classrooms, schools, and communities. Their stories cover a broad spectrum of achievements including ESL teachers breaking down barriers for their students and families; photography and cinematography educators utilizing those mediums to encourage their students to be better citizens; and even a math teacher who has been the driving force in creating a school wide atmosphere of giving back to the community.

ON THIS DATE MARCH 15-1993- found Philadelphia recovering from a snow storm that dumped 12 inches of snow on the city over the weekend. The temperature on this day at 4PM was 29 degrees with a 14 MPH wind blowing, the wind chill was 9 degrees. Shortley after 430PM, a passerby ran into Pipeline 20's station to report a building on fire at 10th & Race St. Pipeline 20 notified Fire Communications and ordered the box struck. At 4:41PM, Box- 442, 10th & Race was transmitted. Companies found heavy fire conditions in the basement of a 8 story L-shaped building located at 145-51 N. 10th St. Due to very heavy smoke conditions companies had a hard time getting to the seat of the fire. At 5:04PM, Deputy Chief James Smith, Deputy 1 ordered the 2nd Alarm, & at 5:21 the 3rd Alarm was struck. Deputy Commissioner Phil McLaughlin Car- 2 arrived on the fireground, and ordered the 4th alarm at 5:49PM, and 2 minutes later he struck the 5th alarm. At 5:58PM, he asked for the 6th alarm. The B Platoon came on duty at 6PM, and in stations around the city, the A platoon was held over. At 6:08PM, Car-2 struck the 7th alarm, followed by the 8th alarm at 6:22PM. Ladder companies had a difficult time setting up because of the ice and snow on the ground. Just to the east of the main fire building was the Bell Teltephone main switching center for 9-1-1 service at the Police Roundhouse. Fortunately, the Bell building was equipped with an exterior sprinkler system that protected it from the radient heat of the fire. Commissioner Harold Hairston placed this fire under control at 7:52PM.
