Bush, Barbara Bush was by all accounts an outspoken, witty, and formidable women. She was an advocate for many causes, most notably of which was her work championing literacy. The photograph featured here is from the 86th Army-Navy game that was held in Philadelphia in 1985. To then Vice President George H. W. Bush’s excitement as a veteran of the Navy, the Navy Midshipmen won this game 17-7. Barbara is pictured here by his side, where she stood throughout their 73 years of marriage and many years in public service. Barbara is survived by her husband and children, and will be remembered and honored by the entire country. Citation: Vice President George H. W. Nearly 24,000 women and girls entered costumes in a “Dress-Your-Best” Contest sponsored in 1954. Marlene Dillman won a trip to Paris--click on the links to see photos of her winning outfits in the City of Lights. According to a McCall’s study at the time, the "average woman who sews" is a housewife between 20 and 39 years old, who has one or two children and a family income above the U. S. average. She makes 21 garments a year – 14 of them for herself. In addition, she makes six garments for her children and one for her husband. Did your mother sew outfits for you when you were a child? Do you sew? https://text-message.blogs.archives.gov/2018/03/22/13074/

National Archives at Philadelphia added 3 new...

While searching through the Beneficiaries Files of the U.S. Naval Home in Philadelphia, we found the file of Frank George, which included over a hundred documents such as letters, certificates, a Christmas card, and even a photograph! These records are a genealogical goldmine, offering incredible details about the life of Frank George and his loved ones. George was born on September 25th, 1876 in Detroit, Michigan. A crew member on the U.S.S. Helena during World War I, Frank served as an Engine man First Class in the U.S. Navy until he retired to the U.S. Naval Asylum on May 21st 1932. The U.S. Naval Asylum was located in Philadelphia, and the campus included a home for retired sailors, a hospital, and an academy. Frank died from Parkinson’s disease on December 14th, 1932, but we were able to uncover some really fascinating information about his life. In 1909, he married an Argentinian woman named Mary during his deployment in China, where she continued to live until her death. Mary’s passport and their marriage certificate were included in the file, along with correspondence confirming that, shortly after his wife’s death, Frank moved back to the States and retired at the Asylum. In his will, he left all he had to the fund for the Children’s Annual Holiday Party that the Asylum held every year. The National Archives at Philadelphia has many under-used genealogical resources such as these Beneficiaries Files chock-full of stories waiting to be discovered. City Safari: The first White House was a mirror image of Philadelphia's Morris House
Recently I was on La Salle TV talking about my new book, Philadelphia Mansions, when the host, Paul Perrello, asked me about my views on the President's House at Fifth and Market Streets. I told Perrello that the house might as well have been built by a committee devoted to political correctness.
