ACHIEVEability understands that there is food...

ACHIEVEability understands that there is food insecurity in Philadelphia, especially for youth. During the school year, thousands of low-income students eat for free or reduced-priced meals at schools. However, when school is out, children face higher risks for hunger and malnutrition. Throughout the summer, ACHIEVEability is serving as one of more than the 1,000 places in Philadelphia that serve free meals to kids and teens age 18 and under. Meals are being served at our Community Services Office, located at 59 N 60th Street, Monday through Friday beginning at 11:30am each day. This effort is part of the Philly Summer Meals program in collaboration with the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger. There are no income requirements, ID, or registration at any of the sites.

After 40 years, first of MOVE 9 is paroled - but others denied
On Saturday, Debbie Africa left the State Correctional Institution Cambridge Springs and, after 38 years, became the first of the MOVE Nine to be released on parole. She also said goodbye to two women she's been incarcerated with for four decades. Both were denied parole last week, for reasons Africa can't understand.

A gnawed bag of raw poultry, meat particles on the ceiling close Philly eateries
A gnawed bag of raw poultry with mouse feces on the package in a walk-in cooler is just gross. Knowing there could be meat particles on the ceiling will have me looking up from now on. And, the person in charge at another restaurant placed his hand inside a rice container after handling a container with mice droppings....ick.

Congrats to our friends and partners from Community Solutions CDC on this great write-up about their Father's Day Block Party tomorrow! Go check it out if you can, they have lots of fun stuff in store. And Happy Father's Day in advance to all the dads in the community!

How does West Philly celebrate Father's Day? With a 1,000-person block party
West Philly likes block parties. A lot. Two years ago, it ranked first for the Philadelphia neighborhood with the most block parties in the entire city. So naturally, warm weather holidays often mean more of the same: outdoor fun featuring barbecues, bouncy castles, the closing of streets and re-routing of SEPTA buses.
