LGBT businesses seek share of contracts Philly awards to minorities
Evan Urbania, who leads the Center City digital marketing firm ChatterBlast, understands why Philadelphia has long devoted a share of public contracts to companies owned by minorities: It helps close the opportunity gap for groups that haven't historically had a fair shot at city work.

Today, NASA is announcing some big news from ...

Today, NASA is announcing some big news from the planet-hunting Kepler telescope. Meanwhile, we've got some history about another Kepler—Johannes Kepler, a key figure in the 17th-century scientific revolution and the astronomer for whom NASA's telescope is named. One of Kepler’s many discoveries was in the field of physiological optics. By studying the lens, and the anatomy of the eye, Kepler was the first to correctly realize that the lens of the eye projects an image of the world onto the retina, upside-down and backwards. Although he discovered this and published it in 1604, it was not illustrated for the first time until Rene Descartes’s Principia philosophiae (1644), which we have in the #OthmerLibrary. In this image, you see the eyeball in the middle with the optical rays passing through it. On the retina, you see where the little circle, diamond, and triangle appear. And then there’s a little “observer” underneath who sees the image as it appears on the retina. Learn more about science in the 16th and 17th centuries, from CHF's curator of rare books and an expert on Kepler, Jim Voelkel: http://ow.ly/Glme30hcGz1

America’s Strength Pictured here is a poster entitled "America's Strength," which describes the differences between the strength of Germany and the strength of the United States, and encourages workers not to treasure wages and profits, but treasure the sacrifice of their labor for the war effort. This poster was produced by the United States Department of Labor and, like many other propaganda posters, was distributed to American factories in order to encourage workers to maximize efficiency for the war effort. It's Violin Day. For decades instrument makers, musicians, and even scientists have tried to figure out what makes a Stradivarius so special. Explore the whole story in the new issue of Distillations magazine.

Stradivari and the Search for Brilliance
One of Roman Totenberg's first memories was of Moscow and his mother arriving home with a horse's head to cook for dinner. Totenberg's family had fled Poland at the beginning of World War I to avoid the fighting, but they could not avoid the famine that accompanied the Russian Revolution.

If nothing lasts forever, how and why do we save what we save? In our current exhibition, Things Fall Apart, we explore how things break down, crumble, and rust. We’re surrounded by constant change as we reclaim, reuse, or reimagine the world and our stuff. How do you protect or repair something you treasure? Maybe it is an old sweater handmade by someone you love, or holiday decorations broken by a family pet. How do you put back together what falls apart?
