12/15/17 The Washington Square West Civic Association has reached out to the Bicycle Coalition and to the Office of Whole Streets, OTIS . We initiated meetings with both organizations this week to discuss ways to maximize protection and safety for bicyclists in the bike lanes on Spruce and Pine Streets. We will continue working with them and others who share the concern that the streets of Philadelphia must be safe.

"People might come to Hanford, Chernobyl, and Rocky Flats for a variety of reasons: to scratch a nostalgic itch, to experience a postapocalyptic vision, or even to reclaim, and acclaim, nature. They may come away with more." In the new issue of Distillations magazine, Rebecca Boyle explores nuclear tourism.

    Greetings from Isotopia
The tourists are almost all smiling. Some wrap arms around companions or young children; others stand tall and give a thumbs-up. Members of an orchestra pose stiffly in matching blue neckties; a dozen retirees in white socks and tennis shoes beam for the camera.

Today, NASA is announcing some big news from ...

Today, NASA is announcing some big news from the planet-hunting Kepler telescope. Meanwhile, we've got some history about another Kepler—Johannes Kepler, a key figure in the 17th-century scientific revolution and the astronomer for whom NASA's telescope is named. One of Kepler’s many discoveries was in the field of physiological optics. By studying the lens, and the anatomy of the eye, Kepler was the first to correctly realize that the lens of the eye projects an image of the world onto the retina, upside-down and backwards. Although he discovered this and published it in 1604, it was not illustrated for the first time until Rene Descartes’s Principia philosophiae (1644), which we have in the #OthmerLibrary. In this image, you see the eyeball in the middle with the optical rays passing through it. On the retina, you see where the little circle, diamond, and triangle appear. And then there’s a little “observer” underneath who sees the image as it appears on the retina. Learn more about science in the 16th and 17th centuries, from CHF's curator of rare books and an expert on Kepler, Jim Voelkel: http://ow.ly/Glme30hcGz1

It's Violin Day. For decades instrument makers, musicians, and even scientists have tried to figure out what makes a Stradivarius so special. Explore the whole story in the new issue of Distillations magazine.

Stradivari and the Search for Brilliance
One of Roman Totenberg's first memories was of Moscow and his mother arriving home with a horse's head to cook for dinner. Totenberg's family had fled Poland at the beginning of World War I to avoid the fighting, but they could not avoid the famine that accompanied the Russian Revolution.
