Remember the name Tamir Harper. At 18, the Southwest Philly kid has become a go-to speaker at education conferences both local and national. Superintendent William R. Hite Jr. considers Harper "remarkable," and Michelle Obama recently introduced him on stage in front of thousands of cheering students.

Congrats to our friends and partners from Community Solutions CDC on this great write-up about their Father's Day Block Party tomorrow! Go check it out if you can, they have lots of fun stuff in store. And Happy Father's Day in advance to all the dads in the community!

How does West Philly celebrate Father's Day? With a 1,000-person block party
West Philly likes block parties. A lot. Two years ago, it ranked first for the Philadelphia neighborhood with the most block parties in the entire city. So naturally, warm weather holidays often mean more of the same: outdoor fun featuring barbecues, bouncy castles, the closing of streets and re-routing of SEPTA buses.

  • Universal Daroff Charter School reviewed

I have been a visitor at Daroff on several occasions. Located in an impoverished area of Philadelphia, the kids are taught respect and how to be upstanding citizens. Teachers work hard to create a safe and warm educational environment. Special events boost the moral of both staff and students. Special needs children are given a high level of attention. In general, a very good school in west Phila.

Rebuild is the City's program to improve parks, rec centers, playgrounds, and libraries across Philly's neighborhoods. Most sites will be funded through bonds paid for by the Philadelphia Beverage Tax.

Queen Village makes room for memorial to a historic African American burial ground | Inga Saffron
Over the course of his two-plus years in office, Mayor Kenney has been unable to make good on his signature campaign promise to rebuild the city's dilapidated rec centers. But last month his administration quietly took the first step toward demolishing a perfectly sound and heavily used Queen Village meeting hall.
