Meet the Asian immigrants behind some of Philly's favorite French bakeries

Han’s first business was a grocery store at 54th and Race, which he left to open Paris Baguette. The European influence, he says, comes from his training in Korea and his European coworkers in the hotel kitchen where he worked.

Meet the Asian immigrants behind some of Philly's favorite French bakeries
Maybe you did a double take when you saw that new storefront in Chinatown: Paris Baguette. But if you went inside, you'd realize that the shop, with its cashiers clad in Breton stripes and gray berets, is actually quite at home next to the Chinese grocers and hot pot spots.

40 small ways to make Philly a better place
In today's world, it can be easy to feel either under- or overwhelmed-or both-by all the good and bad that's happening around us. But before you throw up your hands and toss in the towel, consider the words of Martin Luther King, Jr.: "If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward."

What's a Plan?

A city plan uses community input, research, and surveying, to guide how to improve housing, neighborhoods, jobs, shopping options, transportation, and public space.

Plans also identify how to turn the ideas in the plan into action. Once completed, City Planning works with other city departments, partners, and community groups to make the plan happen.

Learn more about the Philadelphia2035 plan and the West District.

What's Next?

The final version of the plan will be presented for adoption at a City Planning Commission meeting. Open to the public!

Once the plan is adopted by the City Planning Commission, our staff will start working on making it happen, in partnership with community organizations, West District residents, fellow City departments, and other partners.

A great and timely piece about the Overbrook ...

A great and timely piece about the Overbrook Education Center.

Can Philadelphia solve its pollution problems without support from Washington?
The center sits on the site of a former quarry that had become a dumping site. Fifteen years ago its neighbors turned it into a community center focused on environmental education. Jerome Shabazz is the head and heart of the organization. The site has an orchard, a greenhouse, and murals.

Most neighborhood volunteers are seniors. The time is now for millennials to get involved | Opinion
These public spaces are gems and can be part of what makes living in a neighborhood so attractive; and they have only survived for so long because of the commitment of those few neighbors, many seniors, who are dedicated volunteers, advocates and members of friends of groups or recreation advisory councils.
