Did you know that 52nd Street used to be home to a Beauty Museum dedicated to the contributions that Black Americans have made to hair and beauty products? This museum is the subject of story #8 in our 52 Stories about 52nd St. series. Way back In 2001, Shirley Randleman created the Beauty Museum on 510-12 s 52nd St., which showcased how Black Americans and many Philadelphians influenced the beauty world. “We wanted people to know ‘Here is your history: there are people who have contributed and DONE and you can too!’ ” The artifact collection showcased flatirons, products, and even the first Barber licenses awarded to a Black woman. Although she had to close the museum in late 2007 due to both family illness and her own cancer fight, she continues to hold on to the artifacts. “Service is sacrifice” and Mrs. Shirley has gladly sacrificed for 52nd St.
