Thanks Urban Art Gallery for your work in the community!

Part safe space, part beacon, West Philly's Urban Art Gallery 'bridges the gap between violence and peace'
It was a Friday night in March when musician Christian "Sap" Tizon and his band were rehearsing in West Philadelphia's Urban Art Gallery. Then, over the music, they heard loud popping sounds. Through the large plate-glass windows, they saw flashes of light in the darkness. They knew it was gunfire.

Still waiting on improvements along Cobbs Creek Parkway. A CLIP crew was just out a few weeks ago cleaning this particular spot but a once in a while cleaning isn't enough, this requires regular attention. Plus the guardrails that have been mangled for 10+ years still remain. Dvrpc recently conducted a study and took feedback from the community for improvements but the basics still haven't been tended to and funds still need to be raised for long term repairs and solutions. This is why people become disenfranchised. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2047071218660951&id=100000742795891

Hello neighbors! We are attempting to collect...

Hello neighbors! We are attempting to collect funds to help pay for our membership in the Philadelphia Crosstown Coalition AND to purchase a new batch of fliers so that we can continue to get the word out about Cobbs Creek Neighbors. Currently we do not have a treasury, until now all expenses have been paid out-of-pocket by leadership while we were still in our infancy, but in the interest of growing and sustaining we're asking for a little bit of help. We'd like to avoid becoming dues paying organization because we want all to feel welcome, which is why we are not asking for any specific amount. We'll be happy with whatever anyone is willing and able to comfortably contribute. That said, if you are able to contribute to the PayPal pool below, please do. (There will also be an opportunity to donate in person at our August meeting if you do not use PayPal.) If you are having trouble donating feel free to send us a private message and we will work out another means to collect donations. Thanks in advance!

Efforts to tear down `imminently dangerous' buildings get a $2m budget lift
In the recently approved city budget, Mayor Jim Kenney secured $2 million to accelerate demolition of vacant buildings the Department of Licenses and Inspections considers dangerous. Philadelphia suffers persistent problems with abandoned and dilapidated structures, the legacy of population loss, poverty, and racial discrimination.

Cobbs Creek Neighbors shared their note.

Neighbors, we're very excited to finally have notes to share from our meetings thanks to our neighbor Judith Max Palmer aka "Max" who has so graciously assumed the role of honorary secretary for Cobbs Creek Neighbors. In the interest of transparency we're going to do our best to share her very thorough notes on this page for anyone who missed the meetings but wants to be kept up to date. Our meeting last week may appear to be a small one but we covered a lot of important details and had FIVE newly elected committee-people in the room, as well as one of our new Ward Leaders, Mr. Ron Waters. Thanks Max!

    July Meeting notes
Cobbs Creek Neighbors notes from meeting 7/2 Larissa reported on a meeting with the Lindy Center at Drexel. She is hoping to get a work-study student to help with social media and outreach. Also, the RCO status was approved for CCN, and we have rejoined the Crosstown Coalition.

Cobbs Creek Neighbors shared WHYY News's post...

One of our local churches, Wharton-Wesley United Methodist Church, is getting some exposure thanks to a partnership with Partners for Sacred Places. We're looking forward to helping facilitate this new relationship!

From sacred to civic, new life for old churches
It's an all-too-common story in the life cycle of an urban neighborhood. Churches built on a grand, 19th-century scale remain as permanent landmarks, even as the surrounding neighborhoods evolve and change. Old residents move out and are replaced by different communities, and congregations scatter to other locations.
