November is Diabetes Month. The Dr. Michael Somogyi Collection in the archives at CHF contains lab notebooks, research notes, article reprints, photographs, and scrapbook pages, all covering Somogyi's years as the director of the Clinical Laboratory at the Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. During that time, he came to believe that most adult diabetics could control their disease through diet alone and he delivered a lecture on that point at an American Chemical Society conference in Atlantic City. The speech was covered in newspapers around the country, and clippings make up part of the collection in our archives. A small, unassuming painting now on view in Things Fall Apart had a previous life as a travel keepsake. The piece is a loose copy painted on a thin piece of ferrous metal similar to the metal used for tintypes. Art historian Nicole E.
