Right on Chime

The Wanamaker Tower at St. James School Rings True After Tuneup

    Right on Chime
After 110 years, the Wanamaker Bell Tower in the St. James church graveyard still needs some major repairs - but at least its chimes are back in tune. David Kasievich, Head of St. James School, led an effort in May to restore the chimes as the first part of a larger restoration of the Tower and mausoleum.

The Soulstice

Where: Laurel Hill Cemetery - Millionaire's Row at 3822 Ridge Ave.

    The Soulstice
Nope, that's not a misspelling! The Antemortem Society (Laurel Hill's aptly named Young Friends group) is hosting a lively celebration in an otherwise grim setting. There will be live jazz music by Mariposa, a beer tasting led by Saint Benjamin Brewing Company, twilight tours of the 78-acres of historic cemetery grounds at Laurel Hill offered, and bites catered by Bourbon Blue.

Town Watch Round Up

Roberta Ginsberg's got the skinny on the crew helping East Falls stay safe and clean.

    Town Watch Round Up
The East Falls Town Watch discourages crime by keeping the neighborhood as free of graffiti, trash, outed lights, bandit signs, abandoned vehicles, and panhandlers as possible. By taking turns patrolling, members identify troubled spots that could use some repair and TLC.

On the Road to Healthy Pets

Vetter Mobile Pet Care comes to NW Philly with high hopes (and a little trepidation).

On the Road to Healthy Pets
I consider myself somewhat brave. I will kill a spider on the ceiling. I will go down into the basement when the light is burned out. I even watched the movie "It" while I was alone. But, I am currently dealing with an issue that is testing my courage and I am worried that I might not be so brave after all.

This Old Barn

A charming piece of East Falls history gets a facelift as we dig into the property's storied past.

    This Old Barn
This historic barn on JeffU's campus goes "topless" for the next few weeks as it undergoes $300k+ in upgrades, including repointed walls, new rafters, and a new roof. The barn will still need further improvements before it's fully restored, but this first phase is a big step towards preserving this unique structure from the early 19th century.

Buddhist Blessings on the Falls Bridge

Imagine all the people, sharing all the world.

Buddhist Blessings on the Falls Bridge
The colorful flags seen recently on the Falls Bridge aren't mere decoration, but an ancient Buddhist tradition for invoking peace, compassion and harmony. While associated today with Tibetan Buddhists, the practice of printing prayers on cloth flags has its roots in India.

The Divine Hand Ensemble brings a haunting concert to Laurel Hill Cemetery — June 2, 2018

The Divine Hand Ensemble brings a haunting concert to Laurel Hill Cemetery
If I were looking for an instrument to set the mood in a cemetery at twilight, the theremin would no doubt be my pick. An early electronic instrument, the theremin not only sounds ethereal, but it's played without being touched. Musicians wave their hands between two antenna to produce an otherworldly hum, making a theremin performance resemble a conjuring act.
