All the world’s a stage: Five places to see Shakespeare in the open air

Laurel Hill Cemetery, 3822 Ridge Ave.

This article has 2 other Philadelphia locations (Show)

“The Bowl” area of Clark Park, near the intersection of Chester Avenue and 43rd Street

Pretzel Park, 4300 Silverwood St.

Things to Do: All the world's a stage: Five places to see Shakespeare in the open air
In Shakespeare's day, his plays were performed at the Globe Theatre, an open-air, polygonal amphitheater in London, so it seems appropriate to restage some of the playwright's most famous works al fresco. Throughout July and August, some of the area's parks, castles, and, yes, a cemetery, become the boundless stages for productions of "Romeo and Juliet," "Much Ado About Nothing," and other plays.

Did you know that Historic Strawberry Mansion...

Did you know that Historic Strawberry Mansion founder Judge William Lewis was a well-known lawyer and abolitionist? His obituary in the August 19, 1819 Poulson’s American Daily Advertiser described him as such: "A statesman of the Revolution, jealous of liberty himself, he wished its enjoyment to all, and while many around him were trafficking in their fellowmen, Lewis was engaged in breaking their shackles asunder."

Celebrate America's spirit — and architectural style — while visiting Historic Strawberry Mansion! Judge William Lewis built the home in the "Federal" style that was popular in the U.S. during the late 1700s. Second owner, Judge Joseph Hemphill, later added two Greek Revival style wings to the mansion. See tour hours: http://www.historicstrawberrymansion.org/plan-your-visit/

The Soulstice

Where: Laurel Hill Cemetery - Millionaire's Row at 3822 Ridge Ave.

    The Soulstice
Nope, that's not a misspelling! The Antemortem Society (Laurel Hill's aptly named Young Friends group) is hosting a lively celebration in an otherwise grim setting. There will be live jazz music by Mariposa, a beer tasting led by Saint Benjamin Brewing Company, twilight tours of the 78-acres of historic cemetery grounds at Laurel Hill offered, and bites catered by Bourbon Blue.
