Grays Ferry Civic Association added 3 new pho...

This past Tuesday night (10/24/17) @ St. John Neumann Place, Councilman Kenyatta Johnson and Parks and Recreation Commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell gave the 50+ community members in attendance the low down on the closing of Vare and the future plans. Because of an earlier incident, Parks and Rec hired structural engineers to evaluate the center and deliver a report. It was this report that prompted the closure to the center. There are structural issues of the 100 year old building that may cause a safety concern. The Councilman, working closely with the center will fund the $150,000 temporary repairs to shore up the center as a temporary fix. Provided contractors can be lined up quickly, Vare intends to reopen ONLY the first floor in 4 – 6 weeks. The long term plans is to utilize the Mayors Parks and Rec Rebuild program to renovate Vare as a state of the art facility. Current program leaders would be first consulted for ideas on new facility then the topic would then be brought to the community. Many of the programs that were housed at Vare are continuing at other neighborhood spaces or at cooperating facilities outside of the neighborhood. Please contact the coordinators of those programs, Parks and Recreations or the Councilman’s Office for more information. The community can help during this transition by establishing and maintaining a safe corridor for the children going to and from facilities out of the immediate area for programs.

I FOUND MY DOG!! I called ACCT Philly @6:15 am, and pressed #2 to report a dog loose on the street. The call went to the 2 young ladies out on the street patrolling, it's a miracle for sure what happened next. The woman was telling me to go on ACCT's website to post a lost ad when she asked me to hold on and asked me the details of the dog, she had him right there!! I drove over within seconds and sure enough it was my dog. What a wonderful duo this pair is from ACCT that's on the street looking for strays. It really is a great service if you get to them on time. Thanks again, ACCT Philly!
