Happy Valentine’s Day! Today’s post comes fr...

Happy Valentine’s Day! Today’s post comes from the Allegheny National Forest (ANF), Pennsylvania’s only National Forest. This photograph was taken in August 1926 and shows two lovers on the trail to Heart’s Content near Warren, PA. At this site in particular, the U.S. Forest Service conducted a series of experiments and ecological studies that focused on developing new methods to protect America’s beautiful wealth of land. A few examples of the new sustainability concepts introduced at ANF in the 1920s included preserving seeds for future growth, maintaining watersheds, and guarding wildlife habitats. The purpose of this mission was to create a long lasting and healthy forest, one that generations to come could all explore and enjoy. So on this day dedicated to love, show your affection to not only the people you care about, but the places you appreciate too! This post was written by Megan Kelly, Research and Writing Intern at the National Archives at Philadelphia. #happyvalentinesday #valentine #valentinesday #alleghenynationalforest #ANF #forest #love #hisory #archives Citation: Photograph from Heart's Content Trail; Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, Timber Management Research Station; RG095 U.S. Forest Service; National Archives at Philadelphia (NAID: 28208828) and (HMS ID/Record Entry ID: PH-3926).

The Wilma Theater added an event.

PART TWO: ADVANCED HOTHOUSE METHODS March 6 – 9 Advanced HotHouse Methods is designed for participants who already have some foundation in the physical and vocal practices of the Wilma HotHouse, either through taking Part One of the HotHouse intensive or through a previous intensive with Blanka Zizka. Advanced HotHouse Methods follows a similar structure as Part One, but will progress into new content. Justin Jain introduces the next level in the Method of Mr. Terzopoulos, which focuses on the vocal aspect of this training. In the second portion of each class, Blanka Zizka delves deeply into text work and what it means to fully embody the text in performance, which as Blanka explains in the Wilma HotHouse's New York Times feature, “is to have emotion, body, voice, all in fluid expression.” SCHEDULE PART TWO: Tuesday, March 6: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Wednesday, March 7: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Thursday, March 8: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM Friday, March 9: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM ... The Wilma Theater added an event.

PART ONE: INTRODUCTION TO HOTHOUSE METHODS February 27 – March 2 Justin Jain leads the first part of each class in the Method of Theodoros Terzopoulos. Wilma HotHouse Company Members meet weekly to explore texts and embodied acting methods and this class introduces students to those same methods. Jain guides participants through a sequence of exercises that expand the breath, focus the mind and tune the actor’s physical instrument. During the second portion of the class, Blanka Zizka takes actors through a progression of improvised vocalization exercises aimed at releasing tension and accessing blocked emotion. Text-based exercises focus on strategies for extracting meaning embedded in the sounds of words and the musicality of the language. Justin Jain, on the Method of Theodoros Terzopoulos: “It’s all in service of excavating what Terzopoulos calls the capital-B Body. That includes not only your physicality but your memory, your history, your imagination — everything about the human experience.” From The New York Times article on Wilma HotHouse, “A Philadelphia Theater Sweating and Heading in a New Direction.” SCHEDULE PART ONE: Tuesday, February 27: 2:00 PM -7:00 PM Wednesday, February 28: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Thursday, March 1: 10:00 AM -3:00 PM Friday, March 2: 10:00 AM -3:00 PM ... Click on the ticket link to purchase tickets for both part one and part two of the HotHouse Intensive. For questions about the class call Education Assistant Rachel Beecher at 215-893-9456 ext. 113. TUITION: $250 for one week or $400 if you take both. NOTE: "Introduction to HotHouse Methods" or a previous intensive with Blanka Zizka is a prerequisite for taking "Advanced HotHouse Methods." * All HotHouse intensives are designed for advanced acting students and professional actors, but curious and brave directors, playwrights, educators, etc. are always welcome. * Come prepared to move. The National Archives at Philadelphia will be closed on Monday, February 19, 2018, in observation of Washington's Birthday. Want to learn more about Washington's Birthday, also referred to as President's Day? Check out this post by our colleagues at the National Archives Center for Legislative Archives. https://www.archives.gov/legislative/features/washington

    George Washington's Birthday
George Washington's Birthday is celebrated as a federal holiday on the third Monday in February. It is one of eleven permanent holidays established by Congress. Federal holidays apply only to the federal government and the District of Columbia; Congress has never declared a national holiday binding in all states and each state decides its own legal holidays.
