Ever wonder if the National Archives and Reco...

Ever wonder if the National Archives and Records Administration has records of aliens and UFOs in our holdings? If so, you’re in luck! Our colleague Joseph Gillette, an Archivist on a cross-training assignment in the National Archives History Office, wrote a series about the Air Force’s Project Blue Book, as well as its precursors, Project Sign and Project Grudge. The purpose of these projects was to investigate the increasing number of unidentified flying object (UFO) sightings throughout America and determine their nature and any potential threat. This blog posted, entitled “INVASION! (of privacy),” is the first in a three part series which explores the Project Blue Book and discusses records of UFOs in the holdings of the National Archives! You can find Part II, “UFOs: Natural Explanations,” and Part III, “UFOs: Man-Made, Made Up, and Unknown,” on the Pieces of History blog here: www.prologue.blogs.archives.gov https://prologue.blogs.archives.gov/2018/04/09/invasion-of-privacy/

    INVASION! (of privacy)
Today's post comes from Joseph Gillette, an archivist on a cross-training assignment with the National Archives History Office. It is part of a series concerning the Air Force's Project Blue Book investigation. In the mid-1970s, the National Archives prepared to absorb the records of the Air Force's Project Blue Book, as well as its precursors,...

A tale of two historic Philadelphia buildings: One rises from the ashes. The other falls to the wrecking ball.
On a frigid January evening in 2016, just two weeks into Mayor Kenney's tenure, a historic, 19th century apartment house off Rittenhouse Square erupted in a gusher of flame and smoke. Because the fire had been incubating in an air shaft before anyone noticed, it was unusually hot and spread quickly.

We are grateful to curator Bob Skiba and archivist John Anderies for celebrating their birthdays this year with online fundraisers to support the John J. Wilcox, Jr. Archives at William Way LGBT Community Center. We are fortunate to have such passionate, creative, and diligent stewards of Philadelphia's LGBTQ+ histories in Bob and John. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all who contributed. Together, you raised over $2,000 for the archives(!), helping us collect, preserve, and share your one-of-a-kind stories. Want to know more about the Wilcox Archives? You can follow their lively Facebook page above; visit us now in person for an exhibit on LGBTQ media (on view daily in the archives gallery); see a special exhibit at the Liberty Bell Pavilion on Gay Rights and the Courts (more about that here: http://www.waygay.org/pr-sofe); or check out our new online exhibition here: https://sofe.wilcoxarchives.org/. We look forward to making (more) history with you this year!

Immigration: The Polish Provide Philadelphia With History

1797 – Kosciuszko returned to Philadelphia as a hero, residing at 3rd and Pine streets where he often chatted with then Vice President Thomas Jefferson. The Kosciuszko House is is now a national monument operated by the U.S. National Park Service.

1987 – Polish American Social Services and the Polish American Cultural Center moved their expanding efforts to their current location in the heart of Historic District at 308 Walnut St.

This article has 1 other Philadelphia location (Show)

1981 – In February, the Polish American Cultural Center was founded at 24th and Brown streets in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia. That same year, Polish American Heritage Month was established in Philadelphia, promoting Polish culture and Polish-American history in the month of October.

Immigration: The Polish Provide Philadelphia With History
Poland's presence may have even preceded Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Newfoundland with the navigation of the mysterious John Scolvus, sometimes referred to as John of Kolno. While a lack of records make this a disputable claim, it is clear that the Polish have aided America since its very beginning.
