Fog has lifted for most area except for a few areas along the immediate coastline. Warmer, more seasonable temperatures are in the forecast for this afternoon, making a nice comeback from yesterday's cooler weather. A weak cold front is poised to move through the area this evening, increasing our chance for showers and thunderstorms late this afternoon through the evening. Storms should remain scattered as they move from northwest to southeast. There is a chance that a few storms could be strong to severe with damaging wind gusts and/or small hail. Note that storms will likely be scattered and so not everyone will be impacted.

Noon update: Skies are still overcast over much of the area, though the warm front is beginning to move through southern Delaware as you can see by the wind barbs on the station plot (wind comes from the direction of the barbs). The northward progression of the front will ultimately determine how unstable the atmosphere becomes this afternoon and evening. Storms are expected to stay primarily over Maryland, Delaware, extreme southeast Pennsylvania, and southern New Jersey. Hi-resolution model runs have been suggesting stronger storms may form a little more to the southeast, so threats to areas north of I-195 appear less likely at this time. Stay tuned for more updates throughout the day as this is a very dynamic and evolving system. Have a great Saturday!

In Pennsylvania, the federal government is housing 50 child immigrants in Pittsburgh as part of its “zero-tolerance” policy. They are being housed at the Holy Family Institute in Emsworth, a Catholic social services organization, which is under contract with the Office of Refugee Resettlement under the Department of Health and Human Services. Weather nerd time! As a cold front is making its way through the area today, a sea breeze is moving inland behind it. If you look close enough, you can make out the faint east-west oriented front on radar moving south through southern NJ and the north-south oriented sea breeze fine line moving westward and inland along and north of the front in eastern NJ. Why is this?? The wind ahead of the front is westerly which hinders the sea breeze boundary from propagating westward and inland, essentially "pushing" it toward the coast. The wind behind the front is northerly and therefore the wind is no longer "pushing" the sea breeze toward the coast. The result is the sea breeze moving inland. 🤓
