“Black troops were regarded as second-class citizens,” said Hicks, “and often received lesser quality of equipment and clothing, and maybe only one doctor per regiment.” On April 21 at 11 a.m., Mütter Museum Director Robert Hicks will join Mayor Kenney, U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans (D., Pa.), and other politicians, historians and Civil War reenactors at the Philadelphia National Cemetery, to unveil an informational panel erected by the Veterans Administration that celebrates the achievements of the United States Colored Troops.

Mutter exhibit recalls how the sacrifices of black Civil War troops advanced medicine - Philly
Struck down by disease far more frequently than their white comrades, with nearly double the death rate, black soldiers who joined the U.S. Colored Troops would prove pivotal to medicine's understanding of the greatest public health crisis in the young nation's history.

“Black soldiers experienced higher mortality due to disease than white troops during the war, and doctors—usually white—struggled to understand how black bodies differed from white ones,”

Philly is getting a Civil War memorial honoring black soliders
Philadelphia's newest Civil War memorial will honor black soldiers who fought in the brutal war over slavery. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Mütter Museum will unveil the "interpretative sign" at Philadelphia National Cemetery north of Germantown to honor the men of the United States Colored Troops buried at the VA cemetery.

Good things come in trees. As many of you ...

Good things come in trees. As many of you know, East Point Breeze Neighbors participates in the PHS : Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Street Tree planting twice a year, in November and in April. This Saturday, April 21, is the day! We, along with our friends at Newbold CDC and West Passyunk Neighbors have a total of 25 trees to stick in the ground, including 10 in the EPBN service area. We need a few more able-bodied neighbors to help dig some pits and plant some trees. If you can volunteer on Saturday morning (around 9:30am), comment here, PM us or email clean@epbneighbors.org. BONUS POINTS if you happen to have a heavy-duty digging shovel, a pick-ax or a push broom that you can bring along! This is a regular Tree Party, and as a great poet once said: After the Party is the Afterparty! All volunteers are invited for pizza and beer post-trees at Brewery ARS! NOTE - our newest neighborhood Tree-Tenders group, Point Breeze Tree Tenders is also planting trees on 21 April. Their "zone" is WEST of 18th street, so if you live closer to that side of the Breeze, give them a shout -With their trees added, we're up to almost FORTY NEW TREES! ANOTHER NOTE - The deadline for November trees is MAY 7! Too much information for this post, so watch this space next week for more info!

The Greenfield Education Advocacy group has b...

The Greenfield Education Advocacy group has been following Senate Bill 2 for education savings account voucher state legislation. Public school advocates agree that it would be catastrophic for traditional public schools like Greenfield. We urge you to make a call or tweet today to your state senator to show your opposition to this bill. The senator for the Greenfield address is: Senator Lawrence Farnese Jr. Senate Box 203001 Harrisburg, PA 17120-3001 Room: 543 Main Capitol (717) 787-5662 FAX: (717) 787-4531 You can search for your senator by address here: http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/home/findyourlegislator/ Please take 2-3 minutes to call your state senator's office today. A staff member will answer the phone or you will be sent to voicemail. It is fine to leave a message on voicemail. You can say something as simple as: My name is Susan Smith and I live at 123 Hickory Drive in Middleton. I am calling to ask Senator XX to oppose Senate Bill 2, education savings account voucher legislation. We need Senator X to support public education, not a school voucher scheme that will drain hundreds of millions of dollars out of our children's public schools. If you have a Twitter account, join the Pennsylvanians Opposed to Vouchers Twitter storm from 12:00-1:00 pm. Follow Ed Voters HERE. Senate Bill 2 is NOT scheduled for a vote this week in the Senate Education Committee thanks to strong public pressure on lawmakers to oppose this voucher scheme. Please help keep up the pressure and call your state senator today. www.educationvoterspa.org
