Look around in any public place and the sight...
Look around in any public place and the sight is ubiquitous: people staring intently at little screens, hunched over their portable electronic devices. Materials scientist John B. Goodenough has had a starring role in that scene: he invented the rechargeable lithium-ion battery that allows us to tote these pocket-sized devices around without carrying power cables or stacks of AA batteries. And at the age of 95, he’s not done yet -- he still works full time, writing, teaching, and searching for the next great advance in battery technology. http://bit.ly/2pyKgHP John B. Goodenough is the winner of The Franklin Institute’s 2018 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Chemistry. http://bit.ly/2pyKgHP

Very few people can say they invented the internet, and actually mean it. The Internet began as an experimental resource called the ARPANET, to connect several governmental labs together. Both Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn worked on the early designs of ARPANET, but it was their development of a way for all the different computers in the world to talk to each other (TCP/IP) that allowed the internet as we know it today to exist. http://bit.ly/2H4oRgB Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn are the winners of The Franklin Institute’s 2018 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Computer and Cognitive Science. http://bit.ly/2H4oRgB

Can you escape your father’s influence? #dadandme Opening May 6, Renoir: Father and Son/Painting and Cinema exposes the riveting relationship between celebrated filmmaker Jean Renoir and the great impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Jean’s artistic relationship with his father began in the studio: between 1895 and 1910, Pierre-Auguste Renoir made about sixty paintings and pastels of Jean, either alone or with his nanny, Gabrielle, or other figures. As an adult, Jean would remember sometimes enjoying and other times complaining about these long posing sessions, some spent drawing or playing, others demanding the wearing of uncomfortable costumes. But these hours in Renoir’s studio were ultimately precious for Jean, both strengthening his personal relationship with his father and initiating him into the craftsmanship and artifice of art. Be first to see the show. Celebrate at the preview party on First Friday, May 4. Book your tickets: http://bit.ly/Renoir-PreviewParty 🎨 Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Jean as a Huntsman, 1910.
