Just-released census data shows Philadelphia has more people moving out than moving in; population growth is occurring only because of more births than deaths. True, but CCD’s new housing report shows that while Center City is growing, many neighborhoods are still losing population because Philadelphia is not growing jobs fast enough. All School District of Philadelphia schools will open Thursday, March 22, 2018 on a two-hour delay. All buses will operate on a delayed schedule pushing morning pick up times back by two hours. We ask that parents and caregivers be patient as certain yellow bus routes may experience moderate to significant delays Thursday morning. All District-operated early childhood programs will also open on a two-hour delay. After-school activities including athletic programs and professional development sessions set for Thursday will continue as scheduled. District administrative offices will be open on-time, however we urge everyone to take their time and travel safely getting to school and work. The School Reform Commission meeting scheduled for Thursday at 4:30 p.m. will take place as scheduled.

Last Thursday, we brought in a panel of experts to discuss gun violence in the United States and the policies that have been proposed in the aftermath of recent mass shootings. In the words of The Philadelphia Citizen, "While there’s no one answer to the question, “How do we end gun violence?” the panelists and the audience explored its legal, social and cultural underpinnings, local efforts to curb gun violence, and ways we could move forward on the issue." You can hear an edited recording of their discussion in Episode 24 of Citizen Cast. We'll host another panel discussion on May 18. The topic for In Conversation with the Rosenbach: Flash Focus will be announced in early May! http://thephiladelphiacitizen.org/podcast/#tile24

Good day neighbors! As you are shoveling tonight, contemplating your role in the community, as you all surely do, why not think about what you can do to participate in the 2018 Philly Spring Clean Up! The clean up is scheduled for April 7, and most people participate in the morning hours. Some info: A) If you'd like to register your block or a vacant lot, you can do that on the Streets Department website. By Registering, you make your project visible to other neighbors looking for something to get involved with. And, you get free supplies from the city, like brooms, rakes and most importantly: BAGS ** If you register a project, feel free to post it here for other near neighbors to see! Before and after photos get major likes. ** PROJECT SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE FRIDAY, MARCH 23!! B) If you don't have a project, you can look for on the Streets website for one near you. If you don't see one, refer to point A C) Streets will be around on that Saturday afternoon to take away bags upon bags of trash, as well as debris from alleys and lots. D) If you don't have a project, and you don't want to find one, by golly, grab a broom and a bag and just git out there! E) Watch this space for more news about special treats from East Point Breeze Neighbors for Cleaners and Greeners on April 7! http://www.philadelphiastreets.com/philly-spring-cleanup/
