“Black troops were regarded as second-class citizens,” said Hicks, “and often received lesser quality of equipment and clothing, and maybe only one doctor per regiment.” On April 21 at 11 a.m., Mütter Museum Director Robert Hicks will join Mayor Kenney, U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans (D., Pa.), and other politicians, historians and Civil War reenactors at the Philadelphia National Cemetery, to unveil an informational panel erected by the Veterans Administration that celebrates the achievements of the United States Colored Troops.

Mutter exhibit recalls how the sacrifices of black Civil War troops advanced medicine - Philly
Struck down by disease far more frequently than their white comrades, with nearly double the death rate, black soldiers who joined the U.S. Colored Troops would prove pivotal to medicine's understanding of the greatest public health crisis in the young nation's history.

“Black soldiers experienced higher mortality due to disease than white troops during the war, and doctors—usually white—struggled to understand how black bodies differed from white ones,”

Philly is getting a Civil War memorial honoring black soliders
Philadelphia's newest Civil War memorial will honor black soldiers who fought in the brutal war over slavery. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Mütter Museum will unveil the "interpretative sign" at Philadelphia National Cemetery north of Germantown to honor the men of the United States Colored Troops buried at the VA cemetery.

Good things come in trees. As many of you ...

Good things come in trees. As many of you know, East Point Breeze Neighbors participates in the PHS : Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Street Tree planting twice a year, in November and in April. This Saturday, April 21, is the day! We, along with our friends at Newbold CDC and West Passyunk Neighbors have a total of 25 trees to stick in the ground, including 10 in the EPBN service area. We need a few more able-bodied neighbors to help dig some pits and plant some trees. If you can volunteer on Saturday morning (around 9:30am), comment here, PM us or email clean@epbneighbors.org. BONUS POINTS if you happen to have a heavy-duty digging shovel, a pick-ax or a push broom that you can bring along! This is a regular Tree Party, and as a great poet once said: After the Party is the Afterparty! All volunteers are invited for pizza and beer post-trees at Brewery ARS! NOTE - our newest neighborhood Tree-Tenders group, Point Breeze Tree Tenders is also planting trees on 21 April. Their "zone" is WEST of 18th street, so if you live closer to that side of the Breeze, give them a shout -With their trees added, we're up to almost FORTY NEW TREES! ANOTHER NOTE - The deadline for November trees is MAY 7! Too much information for this post, so watch this space next week for more info!
