In London, around 1800, a Swiss mechanician named Henri Maillardet built an automaton that could draw four images and write three poems. This automaton was bequeathed to the Institute in 1928 and is one of the highlights of our permanent collection; it is on view in our Amazing Machine exhibition. http://bit.ly/2nwStJp IMAGE: Henri Maillardet (Swiss, 1745-1830) | The Automaton of Henri Maillardet | ca. 1810 | The Franklin Institute, Philadelphia
