"The Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia, which handles the city's animal control efforts, is joining with the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society and the Pennsylvania SPCA to create the "Philadelphia No-Kill Coalition." The coalition will seek to end the killing of healthy, treatable and manageable cats and dogs in Philadelphia, which saved about 82 percent of cats and dogs that entered ACCT last year. That's a stark contrast from 2005, when about 89 percent of animals were euthanized. "

Philadelphian brings more 'Unity in the Community' during the holidays with NBA's Ben Simmons
South Philly native, Anton Moore, and the NBA's and Philadelphia 76ers' rising star, Ben Simmons, connected recently to assist those in need and spread some holiday cheer. "We worked on this for three weeks and we had to keep it a secret from the families until the day of the event," Moore said of the four families taken on a "surprise shopping spree at Target."

We would like to give a big thank you to the Philadelphia 76'ers, Amy Heaver, and Ben Simmons, for partnering with my organization @unityinthecommunity to take four families from our community on a surprise shopping spree at Target today. We worked on this for three weeks and we had to keep it a secret from the families until the day of the event. The look on the families faces was priceless. Each family was able to spend close to $1500.00 each. Thank you to each and every person that nominated a family for our Operation Holiday Help Initiative. We appreciate it so much. One down, One to go! #Gameon

For the 8th year in the row, we were able to surprise six families from our community with our Operation Holiday Help Initiative, despite the rain. It was easy for someone not to show up because of the rain, but people still showed up to show their commitment to our community. We would like to give a big thank you to each and every sponsor that participated in this initiative and of course the residents that nominated these families and made us aware of their hardship. In addition to that, Thank you to Mayor Kenney and his team for making this event a success. The families really appreciated it so much. @ Down South Philly

South Philly building gets nod for National Register of Historic Places
The future of the former Frankford Chocolate Factory may be unknown, but its past and its architectural character were enough to earn it a timeless spot on the National Register of Historic Places. And that could provide just the stimulus the building needs to reinvigorate its on-again, off-again redevelopment efforts.

How to avoid frozen pipes in this deep freeze
You'll want to keep your warmest coats out and pick up some logs for your fireplace this week, because this deep freeze isn't going anywhere. But something you definitely don't want to forget are your pipes, as meteorologists have said that homeowners should be on guard for possible freezing.

SNOW!! (Maybe? Probably?) A neighborly reminder that homeowners, agents, and tenants of any building or premise shall clear a path of not less than 36" in width on all sidewalks, including curb cuts, abutting the building or premises within 6 (six) hours after the snow has ceased to fall. The path shall be thoroughly cleared of snow and ice. That's the official rule. Additionally, ensure all storm drains and fire hydrants are clear of snow. More practically, though, please do your part to help all your neighbors walk safely, even with strollers or wheelchairs or walkers or dogs. If you know of a neighbor who is out of town or elderly or can't manage, step it up and just do it! Great for the triceps!
