Philly bars open till 4 a.m.? Some say later last call doesn't mean more drinks sold
Over the last two decades, Avram Hornik has had a hand in opening or reviving some of the best-known establishments for music and boozing in Philadelphia. But despite the potential for more revenue, he has serious concerns about the city following the lead of other major metros and allowing bars to stay open past the current 2 a.m.

Every month our Spotlight Tours are devoted to a different theme, April is devoted to American artists. Nearly a quarter of all the paintings collected by Albert Barnes were created by Americans, among them William Glackens, Marsden Hartley, Charles Demuth, and Charles and Maurice Prendergast. Learn about Dr. Barnes’s relationship with these artists, and why his collection of European modernism was so important to their creative development. Tours are daily from noon to 1pm. After the tour, you’re invited to explore the collection galleries. Book now: http://bit.ly/Spotlight-Tour-April 🎨 William James Glackens. Sunday on the Marne, c. 1915–1916.

Fact: Women remain dramatically underrepresented in the art world. For #WomensHistoryMonth, we’re joining National Museum of Women in the Arts' #5womenartists campaign to raise awareness about women’s artistic achievements, starting with our very own Barnes staff. Meet Allison Hardt, a painter, mother, and key team player in our Membership department. With a BFA in Painting from Boston University and an MFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Allison has exhibited across the US and in Europe. She is our Senior Coordinator for Membership and Programs. Inspired by visits to the Barnes Arboretum in Merion, a place built by Laura Barnes, wife of Albert C. Barnes, she recounts, “I sat by the pond watching all the newly hatched tadpoles flutter under the surface and thought about the freedom Laura must have felt in this space. I remembered her bride book, beautiful but clinical in its descriptions. In this painting, I reference both the pond and the book by using a pattern from one of Laura’s wedding garments to invoke plants following a current and placing the viewer looking simultaneously down at the surface and through it to the figure below. Who is her favorite female artist in the Barnes collection? “Since I started working at the Barnes, I have always been drawn to Laura Barnes. She was a risk-taker who created an incredible living collection, cultivating plant life, which some thought to be impossible to grow in Pennsylvania. Her achievements are often overshadowed by her husband's, and I wanted to shine some light on her life and work.” What advice would she give to young female artists? “It’s difficult to define your voice. It takes time. Reviewing my work over the years has been the most helpful in providing clarity about which interests keep pulling me back again and again to create. Follow those threads, and find someone you trust to discuss and debate the work. Also, never feel diminished by critiques like ‘it’s feminine,’ or ‘it looks like a woman made it.’ I am a woman and I did make it."
