On Tues, April 24, members of The Goldenberg Group gave the Little Playhouse, located on the Playground, a much-needed makeover. They worked hard to rehab the interior of the playhouse with a new table, bench and shelving, as well as a new paint job! The volunteers also built and installed a giant, wood xylophone that will be the start of an "everyday item" music zone. The wonderful volunteers from the Goldenberg Group donated 60+ hours of labor. On behalf of all the children that visit Smith - thank you so much!

This year’s Philadelphia Science Festival features a variety of events that look at the Science of Food, culminating tomorrow night with a Science Night at Reading Terminal Market. http://bit.ly/2HTCGiV Limited tickets to ‘Brain Food’ are still available: http://bit.ly/rtmpsf18

Lots of thought for food at '18 Philly Science Festival
People usually stop by Reading Terminal Market for the juicy roast pork sandwiches, the freshly made scrapple, and the gooey apple dumplings. But for the next week, the Philadelphia Science Festival will pull back the curtain and show people how much science takes place at the market every day to make those dishes so delectable.

"Sometimes known as 'sea nomads,' the Bajau have lived at sea for more than 1,000 years, on small houseboats that float in the waters off Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines." https://theatln.tc/2qRFzcJ

How Asia's Super Divers Evolved for a Life At Sea
One gene, known as PDE10A, stood out. It does many things, but it's especially active in the thyroid gland, and controls the release of hormones. The version of PDE10A that's common in the Bajau is associated with higher levels of thyroid hormones, and those hormones, in turn, make spleens grow bigger-at least, in rodents.

The artists in this installation stop, extend, and rearrange time for their own creative ends, whether to convey personal memories, render visible overlooked aspects of nature, contemplate mortality, or document the passage of time.

"While the average American diet amounts to about 5 kg of carbon dioxide emissions per day, the typical meat- and dairy-heavy diet amounts to three times that. By bringing those resource-intensive diets more in line with the average American diet, we could save 0.27 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in a single day – that’s the equivalent of removing 661 million cars off the road." http://bit.ly/2qSwikW

A Surprising Solution to Lowering Our Greenhouse Gas Emissions
This April marks the 48th Earth Month, offering us an opportunity to reflect on our collective impact on the one and only planet we call home. Many simple life changes can make a big difference - switching our household electricity provider to renewable or carbon-neutral energy sources, replacing inefficient household electronics, using cold water to wash our clothes, signing up for a composting service, and recycling, just to name a few.

The way we see it, art goes beyond walls––it’s everywhere. In curating his collection, Dr. Albert Barnes gave us a fresh new lens to view not only art, but also the world. By arranging works according to color, light, line, and space, we’re invited to make unexpected and exciting connections between pieces from different eras, places, and cultures. Your perspective shifts: Colors seek synchrony. Diverse themes find unity. The effect is so inspiring, it stays with you––long after you’ve left our building. Come on in this spring! Discover why after every visit, you’ll never stop #seeingtheBarnes.

Did you know that we had over 50 volunteers that came on Saturday, for #ComcastCaresDay at Bache-Martin? They helped us spruce up our garden, getting it ready for Bache in Bloom Silent Auction and Raffle, they helped give our school a good spring cleaning, filling up a 40' dumpster, organized Ms. Pierce's closet, AND helped us enter more of our books into the library system (getting us closer to that opening goal). How amazing is that?! A huge THANK YOU to all these wonderful volunteers both from Comcast, and Friends of Bache-Martin; from the students, faculty, and parents!
