Today, November 19, is International Men’s Day. According to the WHO, average global male life expectancy is five years lower than for women, and the male suicide rate is three times that of women. This day aims to highlight health concerns that can affect men, and also aims to highlight certain social pressures that can negatively affect both men and boys. Check out InternationalMensDay.com for more information. This image is from a pop-up exhibit our Historical Medical Library hosted at last month’s Mischief at The Mütter event. This historical (not contemporary) pamphlet was distributed to boys with information about puberty, sexual health and more. How effectively have these issues been communicated to young men throughout history and today?

Believed to be at least eight millennia old, engravings in Arabia are possibly be the oldest depictions of dogs known to archaeologists. http://bit.ly/2jBmlrj

These may be the world's first images of dogs-and they're wearing leashes
Carved into a sandstone cliff on the edge of a bygone river in the Arabian Desert, a hunter draws his bow for the kill. He is accompanied by 13 dogs, each with its own coat markings; two animals have lines running from their necks to the man's waist.

Jean Hugo was born in Paris on this day in 1894. Great-grandson of author Victor Hugo, he was a painter, illustrator, and theatre designer whose work brought him into contact with some of the most influential figures of 20th century art: Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, Erik Satie, Marcel Proust, and many more. In addition to avant-garde theatre, he notably designed the costumes and sets for Carl Dreyer’s film “The Passion of Joan of Arc.” His personal work was modest in scale and dream-like in tone, mingling the influences of Henri Rousseau, Nicolas Poussin, and the Italian Primitives. He produced quiet, light-filled landscapes and scenes of magical realism like this small tempera painting from 1931. 🎨 Jean Hugo. The Flight (Beginning of the End of the World), 1931

New research suggests that winemaking may have gotten its start at least eight thousand years ago. http://n.pr/2jqIyba

Georgian Jars Hold 8,000-Year-Old Winemaking Clues
Anthropologist Patrick McGovern, at the University of Pennsylvania, has been pursuing the origins of wine for many years, and that search took him to the mountainous areas east of the Black Sea, in what is today Georgia, Armenia, and Iran. "Everything pointed to that region as the area to investigate," he says.
