In 1998, Koko, a gorilla that had been taught to communicate through sign language, took to the internet in an online chatroom. This was first (and only) “inter-species” online chat ever conducted, and the results were: surprising. The Franklin Institute’s Chief Digital Officer Susan Poulton facilitated the event and tells her story, and, in memory of the extraordinary ape, provided the rare transcript for us to share. http://bit.ly/2KdxiuH Koko, who was born in 1971 and lived to be 46, passed away this week. http://bit.ly/2KdxiuH

When Koko the Gorilla Chatted Online
I woke up this morning and learned that Koko the gorilla had passed away peacefully in her sleep last night at the age of 46. Twenty years ago, I had the honor of producing the first ever inter-species online "live chat" with Koko and her caregiver Dr. Penny Patterson, part of a series of internet firsts we achieved at AOL (America Online).

The Universe Is Not a Simulation, but We Can Now Simulate It
In the early 2000s, a small community of coder-cosmologists set out to simulate the 14-billion-year history of the universe on a supercomputer. They aimed to create a proxy of the cosmos, a Cliffs Notes version in computer code that could run in months instead of giga-years, to serve as a laboratory for studying the real universe.

The Literature Department of the Free Library...

The Literature Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia presents a night with local author Brad Windhauser who will discuss his latest novel The Intersection: When a white driver critically injures a black bicyclist, the residents in a tense, gentrifying South Philadelphia neighborhood can't decide whether to unite, hide, or explode. Ms. Rose wrestles with ways to effectively organize the community and still be true to the neighborhood she fears may have outgrown her. Carol Jones, the mother of the bicyclist, is drawn back to the neighborhood she fled years ago for posh suburbia and finds roots deeper than she realized. Michael, the driver and recent home owner in the neighborhood, must conquer his guilt over the accident while struggling with personal betrayal. By allowing strangers to help him, he discovers ties he didn#39;t know he deserved. Their intersecting lives test the neighbors--established and new--in ways they never expected. After years of planning and handwringing over fundraising, the first phase of Philadelphia's own " High Line," the transformation of the Reading Viaduct rail line, was opened to the public last Thursday.
