Nasa rover visits 'Scotland' on Mars
Nasa's Mars rover Curiosity is exploring a part of the planet named after Torridon in Scotland. Martian geological areas and features have been named by Nasa after places on Earth. Several of the names have been taken from Scotland and, as well as Torridon, there is a Siccar Point, Muck, Wick, Sandwick and Holyrood on Mars.

How are humans changing the face of the Earth? These images show the impact we are having on our environment. http://bit.ly/2jrGyuU

15 before-and-after images that show how we're transforming the planet
Human beings have replaced nature as the dominant force shaping Earth. We've cleared away forests, dammed up mighty rivers, paved vast roads, and transported thousands of species around the world. "To a large extent," two scientists wrote in 2015, "the future of the only place where life is known to exist is being determined by the actions of humans."

Today, we honor dreams of freedom and equality that civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. built with the work of Horace Pippin, a self-taught artist and soldier who fought to make the world a freer place. During the First World War, Pippin served in the 15th New York Infantry and as a corporal in the 369th Colored Infantry, which the Germans called the “Hellfighters.” He said that the war “brought out all of the art” in him. Pippin kept illustrated journals of his experiences in the trenches and also produced peaceful scenes like this tranquil family setting found in room 12 of our galleries. Horace Pippin. “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” - Martin Luther King Jr. Thanks to Curbed Philly for creating this excellent list of 40 ways to make Philly a better place (which includes volunteering at your local park!).

40 small ways to make Philly a better place
In today's world, it can be easy to feel either under- or overwhelmed-or both-by all the good and bad that's happening around us. But before you throw up your hands and toss in the towel, consider the words of Martin Luther King, Jr.: "If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward."

Chaim Soutine (1893-1943) was a Lithuanian born artist renowned for his expressionist paintings. Dr. Albert Barnes purchased this painting from the French dealer Paul Guillaume on January 5, 1923, and then went on to buy over 50 canvases by the artist. Barnes exhibited this painting just three months after he purchased it in his first and only exhibition at PAFA The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The exhibition was extremely controversial; the critic Edith Powell described the paintings by Soutine in particular as “the creations of a disintegrating mind.” What do you think? Jan van Goyen was born on this day in 1596 (that’s nearly 420 years ago!) in Leiden, the Netherlands. An influential landscape artist of the “Golden Age” of Dutch painting, he is represented at the Barnes by “The Square Watch-Tower,” painted in 1651. #LOOKSLOWLY: This large river scene is one his most outstanding works in an American collection. Pay close attention to Van Goyen’s accomplished use of earth tones––note how they seem dredged from his depiction of the riverbed, but are contrasted against a delicate, broken sky of pale blue. 🎨 Jan van Goyen. Philadelphia Museum of Art - Exhibitions - Varujan Boghosian: Master Manipulator
Varujan Boghosian (American, born 1926) holds a deep fascination with objects that evoke the past. As much a collector as an artist, he scours antique shops and flea markets for materials to use in his imaginative sculptures and collages. By cleverly combining and recontextualizing our castoffs-books, cards, toys, figurines, tools, glass, twine-he exploits their expressive power in sly, often poetic ways.
